ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (02/16/2024)

(SPRINGFIELD) Statewide counties and towns continue to address the possibility of migrants being dropped off in their communities. Earlier this week the Johnson County Sheriff asked the County Board there to pass an ordinance requiring prior notification before any illegal immigrant is dropped off and up north, the City of Aurora passed an ordinance requiring at least five days notice before any drop off there. The most recent bus-in of illegal immigrants are effecting cities with populations of over 100,000 people.

(SPRINGFIELD) A new Tax Foundation study has ranked nationwide states by their corporate income tax rates as of January 1st, 2024. While Texas, Nevada, Wyoming, South Dakota, Ohio, and Washington do not levy a corporate income tax, the remaining 44 states do, and among them, Illinois has the second highest rate in the nation at 9.5%, behind only Minnesota at 9.8%. The state with the lowest rate is North Carolina at 2.5%.

(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that more than 500 paratransit vehicles, valued at $57 million, have been awarded to 113 transit providers through its Consolidated Vehicle Procurement Program. The vehicles will be delivered to public transportation providers as well as nonprofit organizations serving senior citizens and those with disabilities. 41 of the new vehicles, the program’s largest award, are going to Rides Mass Transit District, which serves 18 counties in downstate Illinois, including Edgar, Clark, Cumberland, Crawford, Jasper, Richland, Lawrence, Edwards, Wabash, and south.

(CHICAGO) Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport is one of 100 facilities across the nation receiving nearly $1 billion in grants from the Federal Aviation Administration as part of the 2021 federal infrastructure law. The Cook County airport also landed an additional $40 million to make upgrades to a terminal, its checkpoint security points, & baggage system.
