ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (01/23/2024)

(SPRINGFIELD) Governor J.B. Pritzker said yesterday that he expects abortion issues to be a central talking point in November’s election as he marked the 1st anniversary of the Roe vs Wade decision in Chicago. The Governor also reaffirmed his commitment to providing abortion care as he took part in an abortion roundtable with Abortion Fund leaders, health care providers, and advocates for abortion services. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs Wade, the Illinois Department of Public Health says that nearly 17,000 people have visited Illinois from other states to terminate a pregnancy.

(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois Supreme Court late last week ruled unanimously that combining local firefighter and police pension funds is constitutional. It was nearly five years ago in 2019 that the Governor enacted a measure to consolidate about 650 first responder pension funds into seperate funds into one for police and one for firefighters. This caused push back from several local pension officials from throughout the state, but the consolidation has been proclaimed legal by the state’s High Court. Proponents of the move say increased returns from larger investments could be a benefit to most funds.

(CHICAGO) The Illinois Attorney General’s Office is urging statewide residents to be aware of telephone scammers who are potentially using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to mimic the voice of a loved one. Authorities say folks should hang up from the original call and then call the person back on a phone number confirmed to be theirs or families should agree ahead of time to a codeword to use in the event of an emergency.
