WEDNESDAY WEATHER DISCUSSION (02/28/2024)

(OLNEY/NEWTON) As the strong cold front that brought us scattered showers and storms overnight, along with light rain, sleet, and flurries early this morning, continues to move off to the east, our downstate area sky will dry out and eventually we’ll have some sunshine today. However, the colder air will hang around today through tomorrow before a warmup kicks in Friday through Sunday during an upcoming dry weekend, with our next chance of rain the first of next week. Stay tuned for weather updates and as always, monitor a NOAA Weather Alert Radio for more weather information and forecast details.

(NEWTON) Last night’s cold front not only brought with it winds up to 30 to 40 miles-per-hour, but it also gave us a 30 degree temperature drop from midnight’s 70 degree reading to a 40 degree reading two hours later. It’s dropped even further, down to 30 degrees four hours later. As the front moved through a little after midnight, the National Weather Service did issue a tornado warning for portions of Jasper and Crawford Counties, followed by a severe thunderstorm warning for portions of Crawford and Lawrence Counties. At this time, no injuries have been reported with minimal damage. While Norris Electric reports no power outages, Ameren is working on a small outage near Petrolia in Lawrence County.

(OLNEY) It was back-to-back days with record warmth as another record high temperature was set yesterday at the WVLN-WSEI National Weather Service official weather station for Olney and Richland County. The new record high temperature of 75 degrees for February 27th broke the previous record high of 74 degrees, which was set 28 years ago in 1996.
