(SPRINGFIELD) In yesterday’s USDA’s Illinois Crop Progress Report, there were 4.1 days suitable for field work around the state on average last week. Illinois’ rainfall averaged 1.69 inches last week, just over three-quarters of an inch (0.77) above normal. The statewide average temperature was 68.4 degrees last week, less than one degree (0.3) below normal. As of Sunday, corn planted in Illinois was 97% complete, compared to the 5-year average of 96%. Soybeans planted was at 91%, even with the 5-year average. The corn & soybean crops statewide are rated 6% and 7% poor to very poor, 26% and 34% fair, 55% and 47% good, and 13% and 12% excellent. The state’s winter wheat crop is 98% headed, compared to the 97% 5-year average. Area farmers continue to wait on more dry weather to finish up planting, plus the wheat harvest is just around the corner. Let’s remember “safety first” out there.
