RESIDENTS WARNED OF IRS TELEPRHONE CALL SCAM

(NEWTON/OLNEY) Downstate authorities are again warning area residents to be alert to a current scam that’s circulating at this time of the year. Taxpayers are receiving false phone calls from scammers posing as Internal Revenue Service workers claiming the resident owes money and must pay immediately to avoid fines and possible jail time. While the calls are being spoofed and appear to be from Washington D.C., they are not. Taxpayers are reminded that the IRS never contact residents by email or telephone, but only by mail. The scam is simply a ploy to get money and personal information by using the scare tactic.
