NEWTON CITY COUNCIL MEETING RECAP – TUESDAY NIGHT

At its regular session this past Tuesday, the Newton City Council addressed several key items:

  • Approved Bid for City Hall Residing: The Council, by a 4-1 vote, approved an $86,000 bid from 3B General Contracting to reside City Hall.
  • Extended Chief of Police Job Posting: The Council agreed to extend the job posting for the Chief of Police position until Friday, September 27, 2024.
  • New Part-Time Officer: On a 3-2 vote, Riley Britton was hired as a Part-Time Officer for the Newton Police Department.
  • New Hire for Electric Department: Garrett Einhorn was hired to join the Newton Electric Department, with a start date of Monday, September 16th.
  • OSLAD Grant Resolution: A resolution was approved to commit local funds for an OSLAD Grant.
  • Special Event Approvals: The Council approved the Special Event Application for the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Fall Festival and Parade on Saturday, September 14th, and the Special Event Application from Newton Community High School for its Homecoming Parade on Friday, October 4th, 2024.
  • Committee Reports: Notes from the Council’s Water & Waste Water Committee, Electric Committee, and Personnel Committee were reviewed.
  • Executive Session: The meeting concluded after a short executive session to discuss real estate and potential litigation, with no action taken.

The next meeting of the Newton City Council is scheduled for September 17th.
