NEWTON CITY COUNCIL MEETING RECAP (02/28/2024)

(NEWTON) The Newton City Council met in regular session a week ago last night. The Council : approved the payment of all bills as presented – $227,089 for pre-paids and $141,908 for other accounts payable : awarded two bids to McCarthy Improvement for sidewalk work – $119,920 for the West Jourdan Street project and $77,903 for the South Van Buren project : awarded the remaining bid to Precise Construction worth $29,975 for the West Washington Street sidewalk project : approved an agreement with Steven Di Nason, PhD, with Eastern Illinois University for upgraded mapping and inventory of Riverside Cemetery worth $8,200 : agreed to continue with the Cobra/IMRF rates for the City of Newton effective March 1st, 2024, to February 28th, 2025 : agreed to table until the next meeting the possible payment of reimbursement funds for the demolition of three properties in Newton : and after a 62-minute executive session to discuss litigation and municipal power, the Council agreed to authorize a one-year Energy & Capacity Purchasing Agreement, running June 1st, 2024, through May 31st, 2025 : the Newton City Council’s next meeting is March 5th, 2024.
