NEWS FROM AROUND ILLINOIS

(SPRINGFIELD) Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has signed legislation that bans schools from issuing fines or citations to students for breaking school rules and/or committing municipal code violations while on school grounds during school hours. Senate Bill 1519 also requires school districts to report the number of students who were referred to a law enforcement agency or official, plus the number of referrals that students received.

(SPRINGFIELD) Governor Pritzker also signed House Bill 2589 into law, which requires statewide pharmacists to sell sterile hypodermic needles to patients who need them for medication. Taking effect January 1st, 2026, the law also shifts the sale from a discretionary choice to a required, health-guided practice. Supporters say the new law ensures safe access and reduces the risk of diseases, however critics of the law warn it could make needles easier to obtain for illegal drug use and create widespread public safety concerns.
