NEWS FROM AROUND ILLINOIS

(SPRINGFIELD) Energy prices and clean energy policy took center stage during a Senate Energy & Public Utilities Committee hearing yesterday in Springfield. While lawmakers sparred over rising summer energy bills and the future of Illinois’ energy mix, downstate Republicans, especially those with the Freedom Caucus, say the Democrats should be ashamed for calling Monday’s hearing with little notice to the public & without consulting GOP lawmakers in advance. As most of the discussion was on solar energy, there was a lot of concern for statewide homeowners, renters, and businesses that are facing double and triple-digit increases in their electric rates. No future committee meeting was scheduled.

(SPRINGFIELD) Governor J.B. Pritzker has signed two laws to regulate cryptocurrency. While Senate Bill 2319 controls digital asset kiosks, Senate Bill 1797 requires cryptocurrency companties to register with the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation and to comply with all state policies and procedures. Both laws took effect yesterday.

(SPRINGFIELD) There’s more backlash over a bill that Governor J.B. Pritzker vetoed late last week, which will now allow the expansion of Illinois’ jurisdiction for illness and injury claims. At least sixteen (16) business groups say they are disappointed that the Governor did not take the opportunity to protect the citizens, business community, and economy of Illinois, allowing all taxpayers to be vulnerable to predatory lawsuits. The Illinois Trucking Association says the vetoed action may result in more businesses leaving Illinois or simply avoiding work in the state. Republicans have filed a lawsuit challenging the law’s passage.
