Jasper County School Board Meeting Highlights – February 2025

The Jasper County School Board convened in Newton for its regular February meeting, where the following actions and discussions took place:

  • Bills Approved: The Board approved the payment of all bills as presented.
  • Roofing Project: A bid of $1,152,713 from Joiner Sheet Metal Roofing was approved for the Newton Elementary School roofing project. This summer’s work will involve installing an EPDM membrane instead of a metal roof.
  • Energy Transition Grant: The Board was updated on the state’s finalization of the Energy Transition Grant, which will reimburse the District for certain costs associated with the Elementary School roofing project.
  • School Calendar Discussion: The Board discussed the current and future school calendars but took no action at this time.
  • Open School Board Position: The deadline to apply for the open School Board position is Thursday, March 6th, by 4:00 p.m. Interested candidates can contact the Unit Office for more details.
  • Personnel Updates:
    • Accepted the retirement of Brad Harris, effective at the end of the 2027-2028 school year.
    • Accepted resignations from the following staff members:
      • Sarah Bartheleme, NES Special Education Teacher
      • Jordan Brewer, NCHS Night Custodian
      • Brad Powers, District Maintenance Worker
      • Cheryl James, NCHS Golf Coach
      • Alyssa Klukis, JCJH Cheerleading Sponsor
    • New Hires:
      • Taylor Gray and Lily Hemmen as NES Elementary Teachers
      • Emily Ross as NES Elementary Music Teacher
      • Gabrielle Lyell as NES Special Education Teacher
      • Brooklyn Herman as NES Full-Time Substitute Teacher
      • Trish Cochran as NCHS Kitchen Manager
    • The District is currently seeking applicants for an NCHS Golf Coach and a JCJH Cheerleading Sponsor.

The next regular Jasper County School Board meeting is scheduled for March 17th, 2025.
