ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (08/27/2024)

(SPRINGFIELD) The legal team representing a former Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy charged with fatally shooting an unarmed woman in her home last month laid out its plans yesterday to appeal a pre-trial detention order to the appellate court. Sean Grayson is charged with the murder of Sonya Massey after she called 9-1-1 to report a prowler. Since being arrested, Grayson has been held in jail and a Sangamon County judge has rejected two attempts by his legal team to get him released pending his full trial in Springfield.

(SPRINGFIELD) As the new school year is underway, the Illinois Department of Revenue is reminding eligible taxpayers that they may claim back-to-school expenses for their K-12 students on their 2024 Illinois individual income tax returns. The Illinois Education Expense Credit allows parents or legal guardians of a full-time K-12 student, under the age of 21, to take a 25% tax credit on qualified education expenses over $250 this year. The total credit may not exceed $750, regardless of the number of qualifying students per family.

(CHICAGO) Organizers of the world’s largest corn maze are making final preparations before opening on September 7th. The Richardson Adventure Farm in Spring Grove, located north/northwest of Chicago, near the Illinois/Wisconsin state line, has a 28 acre live corn maze with over nine miles of winding trails. While last year’s theme took inspiration from the film Jurassic Park, featuring a T-Rex, this year’s theme pays tribute to John Deere.

(DU QUOIN) The 2024 Du Quoin State Fair is continuing. With free admission for all ages, there is a charge for parking. Today is Republican Day with more livestock shows, harness racing, and the ITPA Truck & Tractor Pull tonight. Tomorrow is Senior Citizens Day with a 4-H Food Challenge, petting zoo, an afternoon Senior Prom, and more harness racing. Then Thursday is Sponsor Appreciation Day and Kids Day with various activities for children, more livestock shows, and the classic rock band Kansas on stage at 7:30 that night.
