ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (07/26/2024)

(SPRINGFIELD) A bipartisan proposal has been brought forth by some Illinois members of Congress to unveil the federal government’s efforts toward preventing coal mine collapses. Jointly submitted by U.S. Representatives Mike Bost of Murphysboro and Nikki Budzinski of Springfield, the Monitoring, Investigating, Navigating, & Explaining Subsidence Act would require the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Surface Mining Reclamation & Enforcement to report to Congress on the steps taken to prevent coal mine cave-ins.

(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois Department of Natural Resources Office of Law Enforcement is looking for applicants for the position of conservation police officer trainee. Vested with full statewide police authority and trained to the highest standards for law enforcement professionals in Illinois, conservation police must complete physical fitness, swimming proficiency tests, and other requirements in August after submitting an application.

(SPRINGFIELD/DU QUOIN) The box offices for the Illinois State Fair and the Du Quoin State Fair are still both open each weekday for in-person ticket sales from 8:00 to 5:00 each day, Monday through Friday, plus available online at ticketmaster.com. Tickets are available for all the special events, including the huge tractor & truck pulls, harness racing, the monster truck race, the popular rodeos, and much more, along with all the grandstand concerts available at both fairs. While the Illinois State Fair in Springfield runs August 8th through August 18th, the Du Quoin State Fair down in Perry County is scheduled for August 23rd through September 2nd.

(SPRINGFIELD) A new “Picturing Lincoln” initiative by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum means more than 1,000 high-resolution photos, many of which have never been seen before, are now available. Plus, thousands more pictures, posters, and paintings related to President Lincoln will be added to the exhibit in coming months. A news release from the Library says the project was made possible by a $100,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, funded through the Illinois State Library.
