ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (07/12/2024)

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) Yesterday in Washington, D.C., the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation, sponsored by Illinois Congresswoman Mary Miller, to protect girls’ sports by blocking the Biden administration’s Title IX (9) rule, which allows men to enter women and girls’ bathrooms and locker rooms. The bill passed the House by a vote of 210 to 205, however the measure now goes to the democratic-controlled Senate for consideration.

(SPRINGFIELD) A new report says people receiving food stamp benefits in Illinois may not be getting enough to adequately feed their families. A study conducted by the nonpartisan research group “Urban Institute” found that SNAP benefits are falling short and that new numbers are needed. The data shows the average maximum SNAP benefit in 2023 was $2.84 per meal, which is 53 cents less than the average cost of a modestly priced meal at $3.37.

(SPRINGFIELD) The most requested ride at the Illinois State Fair is returning this year. Two complimentary trams will be operating on dedicated routes during the eleven (11) days of the fair, thanks to sponsorship from the Illinois Corn Growers Association. The trams will run continuously throughout each day with maps showing the tram routes displayed at various locations. The Illinois State Fair runs from August 8th to August 18th in Springfield.

(EDWARDSVILLE/CHICAGO) Members of law enforcement are taking part this weekend in a charity bike ride across Illinois to honor officers who have died in the line of duty. The 20th Annual Cycle Across Illinois is underway and will continue today through Sunday as participants ride from Edwardsville to Chicago. The event benefits Illinois Concerns of Police Survivors, or COPS, an organization that supports police departments and their families in times of mourning. This year, COPS has recognized six fallen officers in Illinois.
