(SPRINGFIELD) Some statewide lawmakers say another heartbreaking tragedy has once again exposed the failures of Illinois’ SAFE-T Act and it’s time to take action, pointing to a case where a Homer Glen couple is charged with the murder of their 2 year old daughter. Police were called to the home for a possible carbon monoxide leak, but instead discovered “deplorable” living conditions with garbage and rotting food, soiled diapers, medical waste, and evidence of narcotics use. An autopsy of the child subsequently led to first-degree murder charges against the girl’s mother and boyfriend. Earlier this year, after making a court appearance, the couple was released before trial, under conditions of the SAFE-T Act, placing the 2 year old girl back in the custody of her mother. Lawmakers say the SAFE-T Act has turned the state’s justice system upside down, protecting criminals, but failing others.
