ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (02/20/2024)

(SPRINGFIELD) The Internal Revenue Service and others around the state are warning taxpayers to be alert to scammers looking for free money. The State Comptroller’s Office says callers pretending to be with the IRS are threatening people with deportation and/or jail if the taxpayers do not make immediate payments using gift cards or wire transfers. Statewide residents are reminded that the IRS will not call, email, or text someone who owes it money. The only form of contact for the Internal Revenue Service is by mail.

(SPRINGFIELD) A state child tax credit is being proposed in Springfield that could provide an additional influx of cash to take care of basic needs of children that could reduce the number of those living in poverty by some 45%. Under the legislation being considered, working families making under $70,000 a year or single heads of households making up to $50,000 a year would receive a tax credit of $700 a month per child. Another proposal would also give up to $300 a month for a child tax credit for qualifying families as well.

(SPRINGFIELD) A new measure would provide a $500 tax credit for abortion providers, abortion seekers, legal guardians of abortion seekers, and public school teachers who move to Illinois due to abortion bans and content-based restrictions on educational materials in other states. Many downstate lawmakers are opposed to this and similar bills, saying it only promotes moving to Illinois related to abortion or woke teaching policies.
