NEWTON CITY COUNCIL BI MONTHLY MEETING RECAP – MARCH 4, 2025

The Newton City Council held its regular bi-monthly meeting on Tuesday night, addressing several key city matters.

Meeting Highlights:

  • Rental Property Ordinance: Authorized the City Attorney to draft a new ordinance defining owners’ responsibilities for unpaid utility bills on rental properties.
  • Utility Fees & Permits: Approved an amendment to the City of Newton ordinance regarding connection fees and permits.
  • Property Title Search: Authorized a title search for 206 North Jackson Street.
  • City Pool Upgrades:
    • Approved the purchase of a new pool heater from Sycamore Engineering for $70,217.
    • Set lifeguard pay and two summer maintenance positions at $16 per hour.
    • Set part-time summer concession positions at $15 per hour, reflecting the state’s minimum wage increase.
  • Employee Training & Conferences:
    • Approved city employee attendance at the IMEA Conference in Springfield in May.
    • Approved sending one city employee to the AIEC Line School in Springfield in April.
