(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball – the Cardinals had an off day for travel yesterday
* the Redbirds kick off a six game road trip tonight in Los Angeles taking on the Dodgers

 

(NEWTON) in High School Baseball from yesterday – Newton was eliminated from Class 2A regional play
The Eagles fell to Breese Central in the regional championship game, 5-4
* Newton was led at the plate by Lucas Geier who tallied two base hits and two runs batted in
* John Grunloh and Mitch Jansen each had a two hit day, including a double and an RBI.
The Newton Eagles end their season with an overall record of 15-9.
Hats off to the Eagle coaches and players on a successful season.

 

(NEWTON/OLNEY) in High School Tennis from this past weekend – Sectional play wrapped up Teutopolis won the Casey tennis sectional with 29 points.
* Paris and Casey tied for 2nd with 16 points, Robinson placed 4th with 14.  Mattoon was 5th with 10
* Olney, Effingham and Newton tied for 6th with 8 points, followed by Charleston with 7.
* Effingham St. Anthony and Shelbyville each tied with 0 points for 10th.
Looking at individual results from singles action for both Olney and Newton
* Olney: Adam Brewer went 1-1, winning 6-4, 6-3 and dropping a game 6-7, 6-4, 7-6
* Olney: Austin Atwood also went 1-1, winning first match then dropping his second 2-6, 6-3, 6-4
* Newton: Zach Huscle went 1-1, winning the first match 6-0, 6-0 then dropping the second 6-1, 6-4
* Newton: Faron Bartens: went 1-1 with a 1 round bye, winning 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 and dropping a game 6-0, 6-0
In doubles play for both Olney and Newton:
* Olney: Jack Bettis and Kye Stallard went 1-1, winning their first match 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 then falling 6-1, 6-4
* Olney: Tanner Hendrickson and FIRST Walker went 1-1 with a bye, winning 6-4, 6-1 and falling 6-2, 6-3
* Newton: Dust & Ochs lost their first match 6-1, 6-1
* Newton: Carter & Kerner went 1-1, winning 6-4, 6-1 before falling 6-1, 6-0

(OLNEY) in Boys High School Track from this past weekend – Class 2A Sectionals were held
It was Mahomet-Seymour taking first place in the event with 97, followed by Mattoon with 90.
* Tolono Unity placed third with 76, Mt. Zion had 54 and Rantoul rounded out the top 5 with 51 points.
* Then it was Monticello (36), Effingham (33.5), Paris (28), Urbana (26), and Champaign Central (20)
* Followed then by Charleston (19), Robinson (11), Clinton (8), Sullivan (8) and Olney (0)
We will look at individual results and year end awards for Boys Track coming up in our sports report tomorrow morning.

(OLNEY)  Sign ups for the 2017 City of Olney summer recreation program are now being accepted Monday through Friday, from 8:00 until 4:00 at Olney City Hall.  Registrations are being accepted for both sessions.  The program offers severl different leves of swimming classes and parent/tot swimming.  The cost per session is $30 for City of Olney youth and $55 for non resident youth.  Classes held for less than 3 days are $15 and $27.50 for City of Olney youth and nonresident youth respectively.  *Also can find registration forms on the city website at http://www.ci.olney.il.us/new_visitors/parks/musgrove_aquatic_center.php

(OLNEY)  the Olney Tiger Boys Basketball Camp will be held May 22nd thru 25th, Monday thru Thursday, at the Richland County Elementary School Gym in Olney – the camp is open to any boy entering grades 1 thru 8 with the cost at $30 per player – sessions for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders will be held from 8:00 to 9:30 – sessions for 4th and 5th graders will be held from 10:00 to 12 noon – and sessions for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 – registration will be held 30 minutes prior to each session on that Monday – registration forms are available at all of the Richland County Schools in Olney – for more information or details, call Olney Tiger Basketball Coach Rob Flanagan, at  618-393-7072

The Lady Tigers fell to the visiting Lady Green Wave 17-7, being outhit 17-7
*  Paige Ginder led Olney at the plate with 2 doubles, a single and 2 RBI
*  Kennedy Steber had a double and an RBI, Jessika Ochs had an RBI
A quick turnaround for the Lady Tigers as Olney hosts Centralia today at RCHS

 

(NEWTON) in High School Baseball from yesterday – Newton held off Flora
The Eagles outlasted a game Flora squad, 5-4 despite being outhit 8-5
* Mitch Jansens had a double and a single to go along with an RBI.  Tim Weber had a hit and 2 RBI
* Mitch Bierman had a hit and an RBI as well as John Grunloh tallying an RBI as well
Now at 15-8 on the year, the Eagles advance to Class 2A Regional Championship game Saturday at Flora.

The Lady Tigers fell to the host Lady Trojans, 4-3 even though they outhit Charleston 9-8
*  Sophia Colclasure led the Lady Tigers at the plate with 3 hits
*  Madison Wease had a hit and 2 RBI, Aliyah Wease also had a hit and an RBI
A quick turnaround for the Lady Tigers as Olney hosts Mattoon today at RCHS

 

(NEWTON) in High School Softball from yesterday – Newton had Class 2A Regional play
The Lady Eagles fell to Casey-Westfield, 12-3 and were outhit by the Lady Warriors 13-4
* Kaitlyn Cohorst had a hit and two RBI
* Abby Frohning, Ariel Richards, Olivia Shipman also tallied hits.
Newton Lady Eagles end their season with that loss, hats off to a successful season.

(OLNEY)  The First Annual Little Tiger Track & Field Meet was held this past Saturday at Richland County High School, hosted by the Tiger and Lady Tiger Track Teams.  The event was for Kindergarden through 5th grade students.  Here are some of the results from the event:
*  Kindergarden: Grayson Sterchi won the 50 meter dash, hurdles, broad jump and softball throw - Ryden Cleveland won the distance race
*  1st Grade: Mattey Sanders won the 50 meter dash and softball throw - Tiger Ortiz won the distance race - Tessa Mitchell won the hurdles - Mattey Sanders and Bradyn Ebeling both won the broad jump
*  2nd Grade: Jaylan Mitchell won all the events for 1st graders
*  3rd Grade: Colt Hout won the 50 meter dash, broad jump and softball throw - Carsyn Ameter won the distance race and hurdles
*  4th Grade: Mackenzi Thomas won the 50 meter dash and distance race - Hazel Baker won the hurdles - Tommy Ortiz won the broad jump - Roland Krause won the softball throw
*  5th Grade: Kaden Sanders won the 50 meter dash and hurdles - Kacy Sager won the distance race and softball throw - Jacob Slichenmyer won the broad jump
