(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball over the weekend – the Cardinals split two games at home
the Redbirds beat Tampa Bay Saturday night, 6-4 but lost yesterday in 10 innings, 3-2
here’s how the other Midwestern teams did on Saturday and Sunday
* those that won two games were the Pirates, Brewers, and Indians
* those that split two were the Cubs, White Sox, Tigers, Twins, and Astros
* those that lost both games were the Reds, Royals, Rangers, and Braves
the Cardinals are idle today and tonight before starting a ten game road trip
the Redbirds are in Milwaukee tomorrow night for the first of two against the Brewers

 

(NEWTON/OLNEY)  in Boys High School Soccer – the Red & Gold Invite at Charleston ended Saturday
the final four matches on Saturday involved the Red Pool teams
Olney and Monticello played to a 2-2 tie
* Olney had goals from Jacob McVicker and Braden Nicholson – also great play in goal by Isaac Pampe
Newton blanked Effingham, 5-0
* Newton’s Nacho Moragues had 2 goals while Ross Farley and Giuseppe Cucinella had 1 goal each
* the Eagles’ assists came from Ben Carr and Jack Chapman with two each
then Saturday afternoon, Olney lost to Effingham, 4-1
* the Tigers lone goal was scored by Trey Nosek, assisted by Kye Stallard
Newton played Monticello to a 2-2 tie
* Ben Carr led the Eagles with 1 goal and a penalty kick
in two junior varsity matches from Saturday
* Olney lost to Monticello, 3-1 but the jv Tigers beat Effingham, 2-0
Newton won the Red Pool, followed by Monticello, Effingham, and Olney
Mattoon won the Gold Pool, followed by Charleston, Teutopolis, and Centralia

(NEWTON)  in High School Volleyball Saturday – Newton won the Hutsonville Tournament
the Lady Eagles won all four of their matches to win the championship
* Newton beat Dugger, Indiana in two sets, 25-9 and 25-12
* Newton beat Oblong in two sets, 25-13 and 25-15
* Newton beat Lawrenceville in two sets, 25-11 and 25-15
* Newton won the title match by beating Hutsonville-Palestine in two sets, 25-17 and 26-24
Newton’s top players on the day included
* Mariah Earnest, Abby Frohning, Kelsi Geltz, and Maddi Hemrich
the Lady Eagles are back in action this coming Saturday at the Casey-Westfield Tournament

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Baseball Saturday – Jasper County won the Effingham Tournament
the Junior Eagles beat Sullivan, 10-2 then defeated Effingham, 9-4
* the winning pitcher was Mason Mulvey, winning both games
* top Jasper County hitters were Ben Meinhart, Evan Schafer, Owen Mahaffey, and Mason Mulvey
the 10-2 Jasper County boys are back in action today as they travel to Mattoon

 

(OLNEY)  in Junior Football League action from Saturday – Olney won two of three games at home
* the Olney 3rd&4th (2-0) Grade Tigers beat Lawrenceville, 36-24
* the Olney 5th&6th (0-3) Grade Tigers lost a tough one to Lawrenceville, 34-14
* the Olney 7th&8th (1-2) Grade Tigers beat Lawrenceville, 26-14
all three Olney teams are on the road to Bridgeport this Saturday to play the Red Hill teams

(OLNEY)  the Richland County F.O.P. (Fraternal Order of Police) will have a fundraising Golf Outing on Sunday afternoon, September 24th, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – while sponsorships are now available for area businesses and/or individuals, teams of four players can also now sign up at a cost of $200 per team – it all begins with a pulled pork lunch at 11:30 and a shotgun start at 1:00 – registration is requested by September 8th – if any questions, call Kevin at  618-839-5922  or the Country Club in Olney

 

(OLNEY)  the annual Richland Memorial Hospital Foundation Charity  Classic is set for Friday, September 22nd, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – it begins with registration and lunch at 11:00 and a shotgun start at 1:00, followed by the catered dinner served at 5:00 – there will be various prizes and more – the cost is $350 for a team of four, which includes lunch, dinner, golf carts, and golfing – plus there are $20 tickets for dinner only on sale as well – space is limited to the first 36 teams – all proceeds will benefit the Medical School Fund – for details or to sign up, call the Foundation Office at  618-395-6088

 

(OLNEY)  the 2017 Olney Bicycle Classic is Saturday, September 9th, in downtown Olney – it starts with the Richland County Challenge Ride at 8:00 that morning, with registration required by 7:45 – then the free TrustBank Family Ride begins at 9:30 with registration by 9:15 – the Kids Races for those ages 2 to 14 will start at 11:00 with registration required for all events by 10:45 – and the Pacific Cycle Stunt Show will finish things up at 12:15, plus Pacific Cycle employees will be on hand to do basic bike safety checks – concessions provided by the OCC Student Senate, plus free event t-shirts available for all participants – for details or for registration forms, logon at  www.olneychamber.com  or call the Chamber office at  392-2241

 

(OLNEY)  The Guardian Center will have its fundraising Firecracker 5K Challenge this Saturday, September 2nd, in Grayville – it’s a 5 Kilometer Run / Walk with race day registration that morning from 7:00 to 7:45, followed by start time at 8:00 – the cost is $20 for all entries and t-shirts are guaranteed for all early paid registrants by August 18th – awards will be given to the top three in the various age groups – all proceeds from the Grayville Days event will benefit The Guardian Center, a non-profit organization committed to the protection & healing of physically & sexually abused children & their families – based in Carmi, with satellite offices in Robinson, Mt. the Lady Tigers beat Mt. Carmel, 8-1
Olney won all six of the singles matches, all but one in two straight sets
* Logan Kauble won the #1 singles match in two sets, 6-0, 6-2
* Zoe Alexander won the #2 singles match in two sets, 6-3, 6-3
* Cait O’Dell won the #3 singles match in two sets, 6-3, 6-2
* Riley Doll came back to win the #4 singles match in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8
* Paige Steber won the #5 singles match in two sets, 6-2, 6-3
* Katie Hostetter won the #6 singles match in two sets, 6-0, 6-1
Olney took two of the three doubles matches, both in two straight sets

Newton won the varsity match over Olney, 4-1
* Newton’s goals by Nacho Moragues, Jack Chapman, Cole Farley, and Giuseppe Cucinella

* the lone Olney goal was scored by Kye Stallard, assisted by Josiah Burkhartt
* the Tigers also had some great play by Dylan Seesengood and Trey Nosek

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Golf yesterday
Olney hosted three teams and two other players on the Richland Country Club’s back nine holes
Charleston won the match by beating 2nd place Teutopolis, 152 to 183
* Fairfield finished in 3rd place, just one stroke better than the host Tigers, 193 to 194
the Match Medalist was Charleston’s Preston Smith with a one under par 35
* Olney’s best round was Coen McDowell’s 45, followed by Ryan Tolliver’s 46
* also for Olney, Jaedyn Moyes shot a 49 while Logan Muston shot a 54
* while not enough for a team, Cisne’s best round came from Jordon Hosick with a round of 40
the 2-9 Olney Tigers are back on the links next Tuesday when they travel to Flora

Olney won the five team event by beating out 2nd place Lawrenceville, 34 to 42
* Hamilton County was 3rd with 72 points, followed by Newton at 142 and Mt. Carmel at 175
Newton’s top runner was Victor Sandschafer with a 12th place finish
* other top runners were Tucher Rieman, Seth Weber, Creighton Chesnut, and Bob Rauch
the Newton runners are back in action next Tuesday at Effingham

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Cross Country from Tuesday at the Fairfield Invitational
Olney came away with first place as they beat 2nd place Lawrenceville, 51 to 55
* Mt. Carmel was 3rd with 92 points, followed by Hamilton County at 106 and Newton at 129
Newton’s top runner was Abby Stone with a 14th place finish
* others included Jaclyn Barthleme, Sydney Rudolphi, Mya Kuhn, and Cora Buerster
Newton is back to running next Tuesday at Effingham

 

(NEWTON)  in Boys Junior High Cross Country from Tuesday
Jasper County beat Teutopolis, 16 to 51
* Ben Meinhart won the race for Jasper County, followed by 2nd place Clay Bergbower
* Owen Mahaffey was 3rd, Gage Reynolds was 4th, and Luke Weber finished in 6th place
* also in the top ten were Brock Probst (8th), Caden Nichols (9th), and Ian Fehrenbacher (10th)
Jasper County is back in action this Saturday at the Cumberland Invitational

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls Junior High Cross Country from Tuesday
there was no score kept as Teutopolis doesn’t officially have a team
* Jasper County’s Rylea Borgic won the race, followed by Alexis Hetzer in 2nd place
* Cierrah Utley was 3rd, Taylor Slough was 4th, Macy Barthleme was 5th, and Lexie Grove was 6th
the Jasper County girls are back in action at the Cumberland Invitational coming up this Saturday

(OLNEY)  the 2017 Olney Bicycle Classic is Saturday, September 9th, in downtown Olney – it starts with the Richland County Challenge Ride at 8:00 that morning, with registration required by 7:45 – then the free TrustBank Family Ride begins at 9:30 with registration by 9:15 – the Kids Races for those ages 2 to 14 will start at 11:00 with registration required for all events by 10:45 – and the Pacific Cycle Stunt Show will finish things up at 12:15, plus Pacific Cycle employees will be on hand to do basic bike safety checks – concessions provided by the OCC Student Senate, plus free event t-shirts available for all participants – for details or for registration forms, logon at  www.olneychamber.com  or call the Chamber office at  392-2241

 

(FLORA)  the 6th Annual Red & Shirley Ausbrook Memorial Scholarship Golf Scramble is this Saturday at the Flora Golf & Country Club in Charlie Brown Park at the west edge of Flora – it’s registration at 8:00, followed by a shotgun start at 9:00 and a free lunch provided afterwards – the cost is $50 per person with six person teams and mixed teams are welcome – also prizes, a raffle, and 50/50 drawing – proceeds go for scholarships for area and/or regional college students entering an emergency and/or medical field program

(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball last night – the Cardinals lost their third game in a row
the Redbirds fell to the visiting San Diego Padres, 12-4
here’s how the other Midwestern teams did in action last night
* those that won were the Cubs, Brewers, Royals, Twins, and Braves
* those that lost were the Pirates, Reds, White Sox, Indians, Tigers, Astros, and Rangers
the Cardinals are back in action tonight in game two of three in St. Louis against the Padres

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Cross Country yesterday at the Fairfield Invitational
the Olney Lady Tigers came away with first place as they beat 2nd place Lawrenceville, 51 to 55
* Mt. Carmel was 3rd with 92 points, followed by Hamilton County at 106 and Newton at 129
Olney’s Cameron Hough won the 3 mile girls race with a time at 23:46
* teammates Tristen Payne finished 4th, Danni Murphy was 6th, and Gracie Julian was 16th
* Olney’s other runners included Hallie Troester, Abby Rauch, and Alicia Guzman
no Newton results were available – we hope to have those in our sports report tomorrow (Thursday)
the Lady Tigers are back running next Tuesday at Olney Central College against four visiting teams

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Cross Country yesterday at the Fairfield Invitational
the Olney Tigers won the five team event by beating out 2nd place Lawrenceville, 34 to 42
* Hamilton County was 3rd with 72 points, followed by Newton at 142 and Mt. Carmel at 175
Olney’s top runner was Caleb Thomas who finished 2nd in the 3 mile race with a time of 18:18
* teammate Tyler Hughes was 2 seconds back at 18:20 in 3rd place
* Olney’s Owen Powell finished 5th and Braden Nicholson was 6th
* the other Olney runners were Collin Gilreath, Jordan Belcher, and Cole Simpson
no Newton Eagle results were available – we hope to have those in our sports report tomorrow (Thursday)
the Tigers are back on the course next Tuesday against four visiting teams at Olney Central College

* Olney’s Felix Pajonk finished in 1st place
* Olney’s Lydia Allen was 27th in the race, but the 3rd girl overall
* other top 20 runners were Keaton Hancock, Colin Kocher, Trevor Bower, Dylan Ritter,  Rylin Kilpatrick

Olney held on for a four stroke victory over visiting Casey-Westfield, 192 to 196
* the Match Medalist was Casey-Westfield’s Ashton Rodgers with a low round 41
* Olney’s best round came from Zach Duenas with a 46
* Olney’s Coen McDowell and Ryan Tolliver each shot a 47, while Logan Muston had a 52
the Tigers are 1-0 in the Little Illini Conference and now 2-6 on the year
Olney is quickly back in action today as they’ll host Charleston, Teutopolis, and Fairfield at RCC

Robinson outshot Olney, 163 to 185 although there were only three golfers on each team
* Robinson’s Nyah Schulte had the low round at 51
* Olney’s Madeline McKinney shot a 55
* Olney’s other golfers included Abigal Nealis and Kourtney Burgener
the Lady Tiger golfers are back on the course a week from today at home against Oblong

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Softball yesterday – Jasper County lost a tough one at home
the Junior Lady Eagles lost to Teutopolis by one run, 5-4
the Jasper County girls are back in action tomorrow when they host Flora in Newton

(OLNEY)  The Guardian Center will have its fundraising Firecracker 5K Challenge on Saturday, September 2nd, in Grayville – it’s a 5 Kilometer Run / Walk with race day registration that morning from 7:00 to 7:45, followed by start time at 8:00 – the cost is $20 for all entries and t-shirts are guaranteed for all early paid registrants by August 18th – awards will be given to the top three in the various age groups – all proceeds from the Grayville Days event will benefit The Guardian Center, a non-profit organization committed to the protection & healing of physically & sexually abused children & their families – based in Carmi, with satellite offices in Robinson, Mt.
