(OLNEY)  in junior college basketball last night – the Olney Central College teams dropped a Great Rivers Athletic Conference doubleheader to Wabash Valley down in Mt Carmel :
*  the Blue Knights lost, 103-63 as the Olney Central men drop to 17&11 overall, now 8&7 in the GRAC
*  the Lady Blue Knights lost, 77-46 as the OCC Ladies fall to 11&17 overall, now 6&9 in the GRAC
*  in the other GRAC games last night for men : Lake Land beat Rend Lake, 92-70 : Southwestern Illinois beat Lincoln Trail, 75-71 : Southeastern Illinois beat John A Logan, 96-90
*  in the other GRAC games for women last night : Lake Land beat Rend Lake, 71-53 : Southwestern Illinois beat Lincoln Trail, 82-58 : Southeastern Illinois beat John A Logan, 85-78
*  the Olney Central College teams have their final regular season doubleheader Saturday afternoon with the teams from Southeastern Illinois coming to “The Dungeon” – it starts with the Lady Blue Knights at 1:00

(OLNEY)  in boys high school hoops last night – Olney had its 2010-2011 season come to an end as St Anthony beat the Tigers, 44-30 in the semi-final game at the IHSA Class 2A Regional at Flora – Michael Fehrenbacher had 16 points for the Tigers, who ended the season with an overall mark of 18&12 – the Bulldogs improve to 23&5 and for the third time this year will play Teutopolis in tomorrow night's regional championship game : advancing to tomorrow night's round of the Country Financial Three-Point Showdown were Olney’s Michael Fehrenbacher & Joel Eagleson – plus St Anthony’s James Jansen & Kit Koerner

(NEWTON)  the IHSA State Wrestling competition ended at the University of Illinois in Champaign – here's how some of our local and area young men did in the Class 1A Wrestling event :
* Toledo's Nathan Day lost in the first round – finished with a record of 32&10 in the 112 pound class
* Lawrenceville's Garrett Irvin lost in round one – finished with a record of 28&10 in the 119 pound class
* Toledo's Devan Henderson won two & lost two – finished with a record of 40&7 in the 130 pound class
* Toledo's Clay Wilson lost in the first round – finished with a record of 34&5 in the 171 pound class
* Fairfield's Jordan Griffith lost in round one – finished with a record of 18&9 in the 189 pound class
* Lawrenceville's Justin Melton lost in round one – finished with a record of 32&4 in the 215 pound class
* Mt Carmel's Tanner Crum won three matches to win the 285 pound State Title – undefeated at 39&0
congratulations to all of these young men for their accomplishments at the Wrestling State competition

(BRIDGEPORT)  the Red Hill High School “Fellowship of Christian Athletes” has a fundraising “4 on 4” Basketball Tournament coming up on Saturday, April 16th, in the Red Hill Junior & Senior High School gyms – starting at 9:00 that morning, the all day event will be held in memory of Melissa Fiscus, a Red Hill student who died two years ago from a brain tumor – it’s a $50 per team entry fee with t-shirts provided for teams ages 5th grade thru adult & each team must have five members, plus additional t-shirts on sale at $10 each – free will donation at the gate from all spectators, plus plenty of concessions & t-shirts available for purchase – signup deadline is March 16th – call Red Hill High School for details, or call Amy at 553-6447

(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball last night – Illinois lost to Ohio State, 89-70 as the Illini fall back to 17&11 on the year, now 7&8 in the Big Ten – the Buckeyes are now 26&2 overall, now 13&2 in the Big Ten – the Illini are back in conference play Saturday night against Iowa at the Assembly Hall in Champaign
 
(NEWTON)  in boys high school basketball last night at the IHSA Boys Class 2A Regional at Flora – Newton lost to Teutopolis, 61-47 as the Eagles finish their season with a record of 18&9 – Newton's Peyton Wyatt led all scorers with 21 points, while Dylan Davidson added 10 points for the Eagles

(OLNEY)  in junior college baseball - today's home opener for the OCC Blue Knights at Conley Field with Vincennes University has been cancelled due to wet field conditions - at 6&1 on the year, the Blue Knights are back in baseball action tomorrow at Mid-Continent College with home games planned for this Friday afternoon with Muscatine Community College

(NEWTON)  in boys high school basketball last night – Newton won it's postseason opener with a 59-33 victory over the host Wolves at the IHSA Class 2A Regional at Flora – Peyton Wyatt led all scorers with 28 points, while Taylor Kerner added 9 points – the Eagles improve to 18&8 on the year and now advance to face the top-seeded Wooden Shoes from Teutopolis in a single semi-final game tonight at 7:30 – by the way congratulations to those that advanced in the Three-Point Showdown Contest with shooting last night – Peyton Wyatt & Scott Jansen, both of Newton, plus Austin Lewis & Brent Taylor, both of Flora move on

(OLNEY)  it’s back to men’s Big Ten college basketball tonight as Illinois is in Columbus to battle Ohio State – the Fighting Illini enter the matchup with a conference record of 7&7, tied with Michigan State for fourth in the league – the host Buckeyes are atop the Big Ten standings with a mark of 12&2 – the Illini will try to avenge a tough five-point loss to Ohio State a month ago tonight at the Assembly Hall in Champaign

(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball from Saturday night – Illinois lost another Big Ten road game, this time at Michigan State, 61-57 as the Spartans improve to 15&11 overall, now 7&7 in the Big Ten – the Illini drop back to 17&10 on the year, also now 7&7 in the Big Ten – Illinois remains on the road for another tough conference game tomorrow night in Columbus, against the Ohio State Buckeyes

*  the Blue Knights lost to the host Statesmen, 77-55 – OCC’s Austin Akers led all scorers with 28 points – the OCC Blue Knights are now 17&10 on the year, now 8&6 in the GRAC
*  on the women’s side, the Lady Blue Knights lost to the LTC Ladies, 87-83 – OCC’s Jessica Zavoral led all scorers with 31 points – the Lady Blue Knights are now 11&16 on the year, now 6&8 in the GRAC

(OLNEY)  in junior college baseball - the OCC Blue Knights began their 2011 season on the road thru the south : last Thursday, OCC took a doubleheader from Cumberland College, winning 7-2 and 7-3 : then on Friday, the Blue Knights beat Roane State, 10-7 : OCC lost it's first game of the year Saturday, falling to Roane State, 14-10 : then the Blue Knights won yesterday over Roane State, 13-5 : now at 4&1, the Blue Knights have an afternoon doubleheader today at Union College – the Blue Knights have their home opener planned for this Wednesday with Vincennes University coming to Conley Field at Olney Central College 
 
(OLNEY)  meanwhile, the OCC Lady Blue Knights will begin their spring softball schedule this weekend with a trip south – the OCC Ladies will play two at Jackson State on Saturday then two at Dyersburg State on Sunday – the Lady Blue Knights begin their GRAC schedule at home with Lincoln Trail on March 17th

(NEWTON)  in boys high school basketball from Saturday night : in an Apollo Conference make-up game – Charleston beat Salem, 76-67 – while the Wildcats are the Apollo Champions with a conference record of 11&3, the Trojans finish the year alone in 2nd place with a conference mark of 10&4 – the Newton Eagles finish at 8&6 in the Apollo, in a third place tie with the Paris Tigers – while Effingham & Mt Zion have a conference game left to makeup this Friday night, the Hearts with a win or loss will either way finish in fifth place, while Olney, Robinson, and Mt Zion round out the rest of the league standings in 6th, 7th, and 8th

(OLNEY)  in boys junior high basketball – the St Joseph Wildcats won their own 7th Grade Round Robin Tournament : St Joe won the first game Friday night, beating West Salem, 52-45 : St Joe won the semi-final game Saturday morning, beating Albion, 46-19 : then St Joe won the title game over South Central, 53-33

(OLNEY)  in boys high school basketball last night – Olney dropped a conference doubleheader at Salem : the host Wildcats won the varsity game, 41-26 as Olney finishes the regular season with an overall record of 18&11 and end up 6th in the Apollo Conference standings with a mark of 6&8 : Salem also won the junior varsity game, 61-37 : the Tigers will now focus on next Wednesday night’s regional semi-final matchup with Effingham St Anthony : Salem moves on to play a makeup Apollo matchup tonigh at Charleston before finishing their regular season next Tuesday at Marion – the Wildcats are the Apollo Champs, now at 11&2

(NEWTON)  also in boys high school hoops last night – Newton dropped two games to Paris : the Eagles lost the varsity game, 52-42 as Newton finishes the regular season with a record of 17&8 and ends up third in the Apollo with a conference mark of 8&6 : Paris also won the junior varsity game, 53-39 : the Newton Eagles now prepare for their regional opener next Monday night at Flora against the host Wolves

(OLNEY)  it's back to a full schedule tonight in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference for junior college basketball : the OCC teams are on the road to Robinson tonight to take on Lincoln Trail – it’s the Lady Blue Knights at 5:30, followed by Blue Knights basketball at around 7:30 : the other GRAC matchups include Lake Land at John A Logan, Kaskaskia at Wabash Valley, and Southeastern Illinois at Rend Lake

(NEWTON)  in mens college basketball tonight – Illinois looks for another huge win on the road – the Illini are in East Lansing to battle the Spartans of Michigan State with a game time of 8:00 later this evening
