(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball from last night – Illinois lost to Missouri, 75-64 as the Fighting Illini have now dropped two games in a row, falling to 10&3 on the year – while the Tigers improve to 11&1 on the year, it’s Missouri’s second straight win in the “braggin’ rights” game – that’s after the Illini had won 9 consecutive games dating back to the year 2000 – Illinois now prepares to begin the 2011 Big Ten schedule with a trip to Iowa City to battle the Hawkeyes next Wednesday night, December 29th

(NEWTON)  in girls Apollo Conference basketball last night – Newton dropped two at Paris : the Lady Tigers won the varsity game, 57-39 – Newton was led by Tara Flowers with 12 points, while Carly Niebrugge added 9 points – the Lady Eagles fall to 4&7 overall, now 1&5 in the Apollo : Paris also won the jv game, 44-26 : Newton begins holiday tournament play at Dieterich next Monday morning at 10:00

(NEWTON)  in one other Apollo Conference makeup game last night : Effingham beat Charleston, 64-44

(OLNEY)  in girls junior high basketball from Monday night – St Joe split a pair of non-conference games down in Wayne County at Jasper School : the Lady Wildcats won the 8th grade game, 27-21, led by Laurel Zuber with 10 points & Jaycee Luna with 21 rebounds – the St Joe varsity improves to 12&6 on the year : Jasper won the 7th grade game, 30-20 as the St Joe jv is 9&4 : St Joe will host Jasper on January 4th

(NEWTON)  it’s been noted that in girls Apollo Conference basketball, last week’s Robinson at Newton game has been rescheduled for a Saturday afternoon, on the 8th of January, with the jv game to start at 1:00 and the varsity game to follow – that’s Robinson at Newton girls basketball set for January 8th at NCHS

(OLNEY)  congratulations going out to the following for their free throw shooting in the recent Elks Hoop Shoot contest held at East Richland High School in Olney – winners advance to Mt Vernon on January 8th :
* Makenze Bell won the girls 12-13 year old division with runner-up Emma Grundon
* Andrew Steber won the boys 12-13 year old division with runner-up Peyton Wesner
* Taylor LeCrone won the girls 10-11 year old division with runner-up Lauren Eagleson
* Trevor Dobbs won the boys 10-11 year old division with runner-up Dylan Hires
* Logan Shan won the girls 8-9 year old division with runner-up Chelsea Ochs
* Brent Hatten won the boys 8-9 year old division with runner-up Logan McVicker

(OLNEY)  all high school boys & girls basketball is now off until after the upcoming holiday weekend – although over 25 tournaments around the state will be held next Monday thru Wednesday for both girls & boys – we’ll have a rundown of the local and area teams & their tournaments in our sports report tomorrow

(NEWTON)  in boys Apollo Conference basketball last night – Newton dropped two games to Robinson : the visiting Maroons won the varsity game, 56-44, despite 18 points from Peyton Wyatt & 9 points from Brian Emmerich – it’s the first loss of the year for the Eagles, who drop to 7&1 on the year, now 3&1 in the Apollo : Robinson also won the jv game, 45-37 : the Eagles play at the Dieterich Tournament next Monday

(NEWTON)  in one other Apollo Conference makeup game last night : Salem beat Charleston, 51-49

(OLNEY)  in other boys high school hoops last night : Teutopolis beat Casey-Westfield, 86-38 : Effingham St Anthony beat Highland, 63-62 : Arthur beat Cumberland, 57-52 : North Clay beat Edwards County, 66-50 : Du Quoin beat Pinckneyville, 61-51 : Massac County beat Benton, 60-40

(OLNEY)  in boys junior high basketball last night – St Joe took three from Clay City : the host Wildcats won the 8th grade game, 61-42 as the varsity squad improved to 12&1 on the year, finishing the season undefeated in the JMTC at 10&0 : St Joe won the jv game, 32-10, also won the “C” game, 19-11

(OLNEY)  in high school wrestling from last Saturday – Olney finished 13th out of 18 teams up at the Cumberland Invitational – winning the event was Prairie Central, while Benton, Marion, Herrin, & Lawrenceville rounded out the top five teams – here’s the top individual results for the Olney Tigers :’
*  Tyler Stuck was 2nd in the 152 pound class with 2 wins and 1 loss
*  Colton Carmody was 3rd in the 112 pound class with 2 wins and 1 loss
*  Dakota Thompason was 5th in the 119 pound class with 2 wins and 1 loss
*  Mitch Harmon finished with 2 wins and 2 losses in the 140 pound class
*  those who were 1&2 in their matches were Jake Combs, Jake Schmitt, Carson Arteberry, & Zack Stanley
the Wrestling Tigers return to the ERHS mats at Ron Herrin Gym a week from today to host Mt Vernon, Carterville, & Carlyle

(NEWTON)  it’s Apollo Conference girls basketball tonight as the Newton Lady Eagles are on the road to Paris for a rescheduled game against the Lady Tigers – a game that was snowed out a week ago Monday – also in the Apollo tonight, there’s another girls makeup game with Effingham traveling to Charleston

(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball tonight – it’s Illinois & Missouri at it again in St Louis, the 30th annual “Braggin’ Rights” matchup – the Fighting Illini enter at 10&2 with a national ranking of 21, while the Tigers are 10&1 and #9 in the nation – the Illini leads the head-to-head series with Missouri, 27 to 13, and Illinois looks to avenge last year’s 81-68 stinker, which broke a nine game winning streak in the series – tonight’s game features the first matchup of the college basketball season between two 10-win teams

(NEWTON)  in girls high school basketball last night – Newton split a pair of games with Charleston : the Lady Eagles won the varsity game, 56-40, led by Amy Koebele with 17 points & Carly Neibrugge with 9 points – it’s the first win of the year for the Lady Eagles in the Apollo Conference : Charleston won the jv game, 32-29 : Newton has Apollo Conference makeup games tomorrow night up at Paris

(NOBLE)  also in girls high school hoops last night – Noble / Clay City split two with Oblong : the host Lady Panthers won the varsity game, 43-36 – for the Lady Cats, Makalee Payne & Amber Drewes teamed up for 17 points : Noble / Clay City won the jv game, 20-12 : the Lady Cats play in the Red Hill Holiday Tournament next Monday & Tuesday along with Red Hill, Lawrenceville, & Dugger, Indiana

(WAYNE CITY)  in boys high school basketball – it was the final three games at the 57th annual Conrad Allen Holiday Tournament at Wayne City & the host Indians won the championship game over Crab Orchard, 102-94 – by contrast, Cisne beat Edwards County in the 3rd place game, 30-29 – in the 5th place game, Zeigler-Royalton beat Patoka, 52-39 : those selected to the All-Tournament Team included Dustin & Austin Atteberry of Cisne – Nyk Lear & Jacob Speir of Edwards County – Haden Smith, Mark Feather, & Zach Meritt of Wayne City : winning the cheerleading award was Cisne, with Edwards County second

(OLNEY)  in boys junior high hoops last night – St Joe split a pair of JMTC games with South Central : the Wildcats won the 8th grade game, 56-28, led by Eathan Eagleson’s 23 points – the St Joe varsity is 11&1 on the year, still undefeated in the Junior Midland Trail Conference at 9&0 : South Central won the jv game, 30-27 : St Joe has rescheduled action tonight, hosting Clay City with the first of three games at 5:00

(NEWTON)  also in boys junior high basketball last night – Newton St Thomas took two from New Hebron : the Saints won the 8th grade game, 56-16, led by Nick Reis with 21 points and Brock Mammoser with 16 points : the Saints also won the 7th grade game over New Hebron, 23-22

(NEWTON)  it’s Apollo Conference boys basketball tonight, a rescheduled matchup from last Friday’s snow-out – the Newton Eagles will host the Robinson Maroons tonight with jv action at 6:15, followed by the varsity matchup at around 7:45 – all in the NCHS Gym later tonight in Apollo Conference hoops

(OLNEY)  in mens college basketball over the weekend – Illinois lost its second game of the year, falling to the University of Illinois Chicago, 57-54 – while the Fighting Illini drop to 10&2 on the year, the Flames improve to 5&7 overall – the Illini now prepare to battle Missouri this Wednesday night in St Louis – be listening tonight for The Bruce Weber Show as the Coach talks about Illini basketball later tonight

(OLNEY)  in girls high school basketball Saturday night – Olney split a pair of non-conference games with Mt Carmel : the Lady Tigers won the varsity game, 61-47, led by Ebany Brumfield with 23 points and 17 rebounds – Taylor Stevenson & Heather Ernst chipped in with 18 and 10 points respectively – it’s now nine wins in a row as the Lady Tigers improve to 10&2 on the year : Mt Carmel won the jv game, 26-23 : the Lady Tigers now prepare for the Mattoon Holiday Tournament starting a week from today

(NEWTON)  in a few high school boys games from Saturday night : Marshall beat Robinson, 59-55 : St Anthony beat Dieterich, 58-41 : Pinckneyville beat Herrin, 53-50 : Nashville beat Benton, 44-35

(WAYNE CITY)  also in boys high school hoops – it’s the final trophy round of games tonight at the annual Conrad Allen Tournament down in Wayne City – after two night’s of cancelled games last week and a total of nine games played this past Saturday, the annual sporting event will finish up this evening – Zeigler-Royalton will play Patoka in the 5th place game at 5:30 – Edwards County plays Cisne for 3rd at 7:00 – the host Wayne City Indians will play Crab Orchard in the championship game tonight at 8:30
 
(NEWTON)  it’s a regular season set of games on tap tonight in the NCHS Gym as the Newton Lady Eagles will host Charleston in Apollo Conference action – it will be junior varsity play at 6:15 to start things off

(OLNEY)  in girls high school basketball last night – Olney took two out of three at Salem : the Lady Tigers won the varsity game, 54-37 as Olney was led by Taylor Stevenson’s 28 points – Jennifer Luna added 10 – the Lady Tigers improve to 5&0 in the Apollo, now 8&2 on the year : Olney also won the jv game, 47-41 : Salem won the freshmen game, 44-38 : the Lady Tigers will host Paris tomorrow night in Ron Herrin Gym

(WAYNE CITY)  in boys high school hoops last night at the Conrad Allen Tournament down in Wayne City : Edwards County beat Grayville, 63-52 : Crab Orchard beat Webber Township, 79-44 : Wayne City beat Clay City / Noble, 57-17 : tonight’s three matchups include Cisne & Webber Township at 5:30 – Thompsonville & Zeigler-Royalton at 7:00 – Patoka & the host Indians at 8:30 : all weather permitting

                                                   LOCAL AND AREA SPORTS REMINDER

(NEWTON)  The Jasper County Boys & Girls Park is currently taking orders for Christmas Pork Loins, which will be cooked & ready for pickup on the Thursday before Christmas Day, December 23rd – there are two options of pickup times with the first delivery to the Sunrise Youth Center & Community Building at 11:00 that morning & the final delivery at 4:00 that afternoon – it’s a four pound smoked pork loin for only $20 each with all the proceeds to support all the activities at the Boys & Girls Park – orders should be placed before 8:00 this coming Sunday night – contact any Park Board member or call 783-2199.
