* the NL Central Division leading Milwaukee Brewers were idle on Monday
the Cardinals are back at it tonight against the Rockies at Busch Stadium in St. Louis

 

(OLNEY)  the Illinois State Junior League Baseball Tournament is set to start tonight up north
the double elimination tournament is being played in Dillon Park up in Rock Falls, Illinois
there are two first round games slated for this Tuesday night
* Evergreen Park plays Cicero at 5:30
* the Clear Ridge plays Rochelle at 8:00
there are two winner’s bracket games set for tomorrow night
* the Olney All Stars will play tonight’s Evergreen Park / Cicero winner at 5:30 Wednesday evening
* Warren Park will play the Clear Ridge / Rochelle winner in the 8:00 game tomorrow night
the tournament then continues thru Sunday

 

(NEWTON)  the Ohio Valley Regional 13U Babe Ruth Tournament is later this week in Munster, Indiana
there will be team & manager meetings Wednesday evening & the players are welcomed Wednesday night
* the games will get started at 9:00 this coming Thursday morning

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Recreation Council will host its White Squirrel Triathlon on Saturday, August 5th, and the registration now open – the 7th annual event will include a 200 meter swim at the Musgrove Aquatic Center, a 14.6 mile gravel-free bike ride, and a 5 kilometer run – all proceeds help with the local Richland County Recreation Council programs and sponsorships – registration for the 2017 Triathlon is now available online at  www.rcrcolney.com/white-squirrel-triathlon  – sign up today

*  the first practice for Junior High Cross Country is next Monday morning, July 31st, from 7:30 to 8:30 in Sam Parr State Park at the White Oak Area – all Jasper County boys and girls are invited out
*  the first practice & tryouts for Junior High Baseball has been changed from next Monday now to next Tuesday, August 1st, from 8:00 to 10:00, at the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park – all boys invited
* (a change)  the parent’s meeting for all JCJH fall sports has been rescheduled for next Tuesday, August 1st, at 6:00, in the NCHS Auditorium – that’s a change from next Monday night – parents of junior high students who want to participate in baseball, cross country, or softball should attend this meeting – parents will fill out all necessary forms, get practice schedules, game schedules, and pay the $25 per player participation fee – all athletes must have an up-to-date physical in order to begin practice

 

(OLNEY)  the 8th Annual MS “Join the Movement” event is this coming Saturday, July 29th, at the Richland County Middle School in Olney – the activities begin with the 25 mile Bike Ride at 7:30 that morning, then the 5K MS Challenge Run at 7:35, the 5K Walk at 7:40, and the MS Walk which is Handicap Accessible starts at 7:45 – while the registration fees are waived for all Richland County youth 18 and under by the Carrie Winter Trust, the registration will be available one hour before each event – printable forms are available online at  www.olneyms.org  or on the “Join the Movement” Facebook page – all event participants and the general public are then invited to the Olney VFW for a meal at 5:00 that evening and a fundraising auction at 6:00 – the meal is by donation at the door, plus carry-outs will be available – all proceeds to benefit the local MS Chapter – again, for more details, logon at  www.olneyms.org

* winning Friday night, the Redbirds lost to the Cubs Saturday, 3-2 and lost yesterday, 5-3
* here’s how the other Midwestern MLB teams did on Saturday and Sunday
* those that won two games were the Cubs, Royals, Indians, and Rangers
* those that split their two games were the Brewers, Reds, Tigers, Twins, and Astros
* those that lost two games were the Pirates, White Sox, and Braves
the Cardinals return home to start a seven game home stand tonight at Busch Stadium in St. Louis
the Redbirds will begin a three game series this Monday evening against the Colorado Rockies

 

(OLNEY)  in Summer Swim Team Competition at Saturday’s Harrisburg Sprint Swimvitational
host Harrisburg won the nine team event by beating out 2nd place Marion, 413 to 400
* Olney finished 3rd with 292 points, followed by Fairfield (250), Herrin (152), and McLeansboro (141)
* Mt. Carmel was 7th with 112 points, followed by Carmi (70) and Mt. Vernon, Indiana (34)
the Tigersharks had a small team of only 17 swimmers, seven of which place at the top of their age group
* the list for Olney included Blair Grove, Judah Dicks, Danielle Brown, and Landyn Piercefield
* the list of Tigersharks also included Jadyn Holubek, Maria Mayorga, and Owen Powell
Olney had two other swimmers who finished in the top three of their division
* Carolyn Powell and Kaylei Eubank
the Tigersharks now prepare for their fundraising “Kickin 4 Kash” event tomorrow night from 6:00 to 10:00

(OLNEY)  the 12 Year Old Little League Sub State Baseball Tournament ended Saturday night in Olney
it was Beardstown coming back to win three games in a row to claim the championship
* Beardstown won back-to-back championship games beating Olney Friday night, 14-11
* Beardstown then won the overall title by beating Olney Saturday night, 19-11
while Olney finishes the postseason at 4-2, Beardstown advances to the State Tournament this week
the City of Olney & the Olney Little League will host the 12 Year Old State this weekend at Musgrove Park

 

(OLNEY)  the 11 Year Old Little League Sub State Baseball Tournament ended last night up in Paris
* Olney won the first of three games Friday night, beating Paris, 9-2
* in Saturday night’s game, there was no score provided to us between Paris and Pike County
* and in last night’s final game, Olney beat Pike County, 11-1 to win the Sub State championship
the best of luck to the still undefeated Olney 11 Year Old All Stars who are now 5&0 in the postseason
the 11 Year Old State Tournament is this weekend up in the Chicagoland area

 

(OLNEY)  the 10 Year Old Little League Sub State Baseball Tournament ended yesterday at Mt. Sterling
* Paris beat Macomb in the first of three games Friday night, 9-3
* Paris won the Saturday night game over Olney, 15-3
* then Olney dropped the third and final game yesterday afternoon, falling to Macomb, 11-1
despite the tough loss, the Olney All Stars finish the postseason at 3-2 and an overall job well done
the two top teams advance to the 10 Year Old State Tournament coming up this weekend
that’s both Paris and Macomb moving on to the State Tournament in the Chicagoland area

 

(OLNEY/NEWTON)  two more area teams begin their next tournament action later this week

the Cardinals are back in Chicago against the Cubs this afternoon in Wrigley Field

 

(OLNEY)  at the 12 Year Old Little League Baseball Section Tournament in Olney’s Musgrove Park
game four was played last night – the first championship game
* Olney took a tough loss late to Beardstwon, 14-11
* Cove Trout led the Olney squad at the plate with a pair of home runs.
The tournament now moves into the final day with the second championship game tonight at 6:00.

a three team, round robin tournament with single games to be played
* Olney over Paris, 9-2
the tournament has two more games to be played this weekend – another game tonight
* Paris will play Pike County at 7:00

the winner will advance to the 11 Year Old State Tournament

game three was played last night – an elimination round game in the consolation bracket
* Beardstown avenged the tournament’s first game loss to Paris, with a 15-13 win
the tournament’s first championship game is tonight at 6:00
* Olney will play Beardstown
should a second & final championship game be needed, it would be tomorrow night at 6:00

the Cardinals are back in New York today for the final of four games against the Mets

 

(NEWTON)  at the Fifth Division Senior Legion Tournament yesterday in Highland
Newton Post 20 had their season end with a tough loss to Aviston, 7-5
the Jasper County squad left the bases loaded in the final three innings of play
* Luke Geier led Newton with a double, two singles, and two RBI
* Mitch Bierman and Matt Goedde each had an RBI single
* other hits from Nate Meinhart, Ben Britton, and John Grunloh
Newton Post 20 ends their summer season with 21 wins and only 6 losses
the tournament continues with two games today and the final one or two games tomorrow

 

(OLNEY)  at the Junior League Baseball Sub State Tournament up in Orion, in the Quad City Area
the a five-team, pool play tournament continued with two more games last night
* Streator beat Brown County, 11-7
* Rochelle slipped by Moline, 13-12 in five innings – a game cut short due to lightning and rain
the tournament’s final game will be tonight
* Brown County plays Moline
Olney and Rochelle will advance to the Junior League State Tournament in Rock Falls next week

game two was played last night as the Olney All Stars beat Paris, 11-2
* Carter Beard led Olney’s hitting with a three-run home run, a solo home run, and four RBI
* Zechariah Wease hit a solo home run and Evan Uhl had a pair of singles
* Karson Burton pitched five-plus innings for the win
the tournament’s third game is tonight
* an first elimination game at 6:00 between Beardstown and Paris
* the first championship game will be tomorrow night at 6:00

(OLNEY)  the 10 Year Old Little League Baseball Sub State is this weekend up in Mt. Sterling
a three team, round robin tournament with single games to be played
* Paris (District 2) will play Macomb (District 17) at 6:00 tomorrow night
* the Olney All Stars (District 1) will play Paris at 2:00 on Saturday afternoon
* then Olney will play Macomb in the tournament’s final game at 2:00 on Sunday
the winner will advance to the 10 Year Old State Tournament

 

(OLNEY)  it’s a Girls All Star Softball Night coming up tonight at Musgrove Park in Olney
* the Olney 14U, 10U, and 8U teams will all be playing double headers against Red Hill / Bridgeport
all the first games in each age group will begin at 6:00 this Thursday evening

 

(OLNEY)  in Summer Swim Team Competition – the Olney Tigersharks are back in the water tonight
* Olney will host Salem tonight in a Dual Meet at the Musgrove Aquatic Center starting at 6:30
the Tigersharks will then compete in the Harrisburg Invitational this coming Saturday morning

(OLNEY)  Olney Central College has announced the 2017 Summer Basketball Camp for both boys & girls entering grades K thru 8 – the four day camp will run each morning, Monday thru Thursday, August 7th thru 10th, in the OCC Gym, with the Blue Knight’s Basketball coaching staff conducting the camp – it’s for grades K thru 4 from 9:00 to 10:30 each morning, then grades 5 thru 8 each morning from 10:30 to 12:00 – the camp objectives are to improve athletic skills and confidence in all aspects of basketball – the $50 per player cost will include a camp T-shirt – all forms and fees must be received by August 1st to guarantee a camp T-shirt – registration forms are available by contacting Blue Knights Basketball Coach Mike Burris at Olney Central College – call  812-381-3569  or email Coach Burris at  This email address is being protected from spambots. (OLNEY)  the Richland County Recreation Council will host its White Squirrel Triathlon on Saturday, August 5th, and the registration now open – the 7th annual event will include a 200 meter swim at the Musgrove Aquatic Center, a 14.6 mile gravel-free bike ride, and a 5 kilometer run – all proceeds help with the local Richland County Recreation Council programs and sponsorships – registration for the 2017 Triathlon is now available online at  www.rcrcolney.com/white-squirrel-triathlon  – sign up today


 
(NEWTON)  here’s a note to all parents of athletes at the Jasper County Junior High School in Newton  :
*  the first practice for Junior High Softball is next Monday morning, July 24th, from 8:00 to 10:00, at the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park – a complete practice/tryout schedule will be handed out at that time
*  the first practice for Junior High Cross Country is the following Monday morning, July 31st, from 7:30 to 8:30 in Sam Parr State Park at the White Oak Area – all Jasper County boys and girls are invited out
*  the first practice for Junior High Baseball is also that Monday morning, July 31st, from 8:00 to 10:00 at the Jasper County Boys & Girls Park – the practice/tryout schedule will be handed out later
* and a parent’s meeting will be held for all three of the before-mentioned sports on Monday night, July 31st, in the NCHS/JCJH cafeteria, starting at 6:00 – parents of junior high students who want to participate in baseball, cross country, or softball should attend this meeting – parents will fill out all necessary forms, get practice schedules, game schedules, and pay the $25 per player participation fee – all athletes must have an up-to-date physical in order to begin practice – for more details, call the JCJH School, at  618-783-4202

 

(OLNEY)  the 8th Annual MS “Join the Movement” event is coming up on Saturday, July 29th, at the Richland County Middle School in Olney – the activities begin with the 25 mile Bike Ride at 7:30 that morning, then the 5K MS Challenge Run at 7:35, the 5K Walk at 7:40, and the MS Walk which is Handicap Accessible starts at 7:45 – while the registration fees are waived for all Richland County youth 18 and under by the Carrie Winter Trust, the registration will be available one hour before each event – printable forms are available online at  www.olneyms.org  or on the “Join the Movement” Facebook page – all event participants and the general public are then invited to the Olney VFW for a meal at 5:00 that evening and a fundraising auction at 6:00 – the meal is by donation at the door, plus carry-outs will be available – all proceeds to benefit the local MS Chapter – again, for more details, logon at  www.olneyms.org

 

(NEWTON)  last year’s reserved football seat ticket holders in Newton will have a chance to retain their reserved seats by calling the Newton Community High School office next Monday, July 24th, at 783-2303, to let the office know if they want the same seats as a year ago – the general public can purchase reserved football seats at NCHS from 8:00 to 12:00 noon daily, Monday & Tuesday, July 31st & August 1st – family passes are also available for purchase – call or stop by the NCHS office during regular office hours
