* the Redbirds beat the Royals for the fourth straight night, 8-6

* those that were idle were the Cubs, Braves, and Rangers
the Cardinals stay at home in St. Louis to start a three game weekend series tonight against Atlanta

 

(OLNEY)  at the Junior League Baseball Central Regional Tournament in Fort Wayne, Indiana
the tournament came to an end yesterday with the final three games
in the two semi-final games on Thursday
* Wisconsin slipped by Iowa, 7-6
* Michigan beat Ohio, 12-2
then in last evening’s championship game
* Michigan beat Wisconsin, 12-2
the team from Michigan will now advance to the Junior League World Series up in Taylor, Michigan

at the six team Mt. Carmel Invitational
* the host Golden Aces beat 2nd place Hamilton County, 309 to 339
* Lawrenceville was 3rd with 341 points, followed by Fairfield with 347 points
* Carmi was 5th with 367 points and Harrisburg finished last
* the Match Medalist was Mt. Carmel's Dawson Brown with a 72
* Lawrenceville’s top round came from Nolan Tewell with an 81
at the 12 team St. Anthony Invitational
* a Hillsboro team won the event by beating out on of the two St. Anthony teams, 302 to 322
* Sullivan was 3rd with 332 points, followed by Flora (344), Altamont (358), and Teutopolis (362)
* Robinson and Effingham tied for 6th place at 364, then Vandalia (386) and St. Thomas More (378)
* other teams from Greenville, Decatur St. Teresa, and additional teams from St. Anthony and Hillsboro

(NEWTON)  with the IHSA Fall Sports all now practicing, the Newton Community High School and its Athletic Club invites everyone to the annual Media Day event at NCHS coming up a week from tonight, August 18th – with football pictures to be taken at 5:00, the Marching Eagles’ pre-game show will kick things off at 6:00 on Chizevsky Field – the Athletic Boosters will be recognized at 6:15, followed by the Cheerleaders, the Eagles Soccer team, the Lady Eagles Volleyball squad, the Lady Eagles Tennis team, the Newton Cross Country runners, then Freshmen Football, and then the Newton Eagle Varsity Football team – concessions will be available and everyone’s invited out to meet this year’s athletes and coaches at NCHS

 

(OLNEY)  the Richland County High School will also be hosting a special event a week from tonight, August 18th, at the RCHS Athletic Field in Olney – it’s “Meet the Tigers” night as the Marching Tigers will kick things off with a short performance at 6:30 – then all athletes, coaches, and volunteers will be recognized in each fall sport or activity – then the Olney Tigers Football team will have a light scrimmage – plus the Richland County High School Sports Boosters will have concessions available for purchase – that’s all a week from tonight, August 18th, at Richland County High School in Olney – all ages are invited

 

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Middle School in Olney will be offering sports physicals next Tuesday night in the RCMS cafeteria from 6:00 to 8:00 – representatives from Carle Richland Memorial Hospital and Market Street Medical will administer the physicals at $25 per athlete – call RCMS if any questions

 

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Sports Boosters will begin selling their Tiger Booster cards tomorrow as student athletes will be going door to door between 10:00 and 12:00 noon – the Tiger Booster cards are priced at two cards for $25 – the cards provide discounts at participating businesses in the area running from September 1st, 2017, thru August 31st, 2018 – the fundraising discount cards will also be on sale at all home football games, including next Friday night’s “Meet the Tigers” night at RCHS – the Tiger Booster cards are available from any Richland County student athlete and the cards can also be purchased at the Richland County High School, Middle School, or Elementary School – thanks for supporting our athletes

the Cardinals are back at home tonight for a fourth game in a row against the KC Royals in St. Louis

 

(OLNEY)  at the Junior League Baseball Central Regional Tournament in Fort Wayne, Indiana
the top eight teams began the single elimination round portion of the tournament yesterday
the four quarter-final games were played on Wednesday
* one of the top seeds, Iowa (4-0) eliminated Minnesota (1-3), 15-3
* the other top seed, Michigan (5-0) eliminated Kentucky (1-4), 12-2
* a 3rd seed, Wisconsin (2-2) eliminated the host team from Fort Wayne (3-1), 13-9
* and 2nd seeded Warren Park from Illinois was eliminated by Ohio (3-2), 8-6
   * the Warren Park team finished the tournament with two wins and three losses
the tournament’s final three games are scheduled for today in Fort Wayne
* a semi-final matchup between Iowa and Wisconsin at 11:00
* then the other semi-final between Michigan and Ohio at 2:00
* the two winners will square off in the championship game later this evening at 5:30
the tournament champs will advance to the Junior League World Series up in Taylor, Michigan

 

(NEWTON)  in Junior High Softball from this past Tuesday – Jasper County picked up another win
the Junior Lady Eagles took care of  Lawrenceville, 20-0
* Kayla Kocher was Jasper County’s winning pitcher, throwing a complete game shutout
the Jasper County girls improve to 3-0 on the year, now 2-0 in conference action
the Junior Lady Eagles are back in action today at Casey

the Cardinals are back at home tonight for a quick five game home stand thru the upcoming weekend
the Birds start a short two game series tonight with the Royals at Busch Stadium in St. Louis

 

(OLNEY)  at the Junior League Baseball Central Regional Tournament in Fort Wayne, Indiana
the eleven team tournament ended its pool play competition yesterday and last night
* representing Illinois, Warren Park lost its second game in a row, falling to Michigan, 11-5
the top eight teams now advance into the single elimination round portion of the tournament
and it sets up the four quarter-final games coming up later today in Fort Wayne
* one of the top seeds, Iowa, at 3-0, will play a 4th seed, Minnesota, at 1-2
* the other top seed, Michigan, at 4-0, will play a 4th seed, Kentucky, at 1-3
* the 2nd seeded host team from Fort Wayne, at 3-0, will play a 3rd seed, Wisconsin, at 1-2

(OLNEY)  The Guardian Center will have its fundraising Firecracker 5K Challenge on Saturday, September 2nd, in Grayville – it’s a 5 Kilometer Run / Walk with race day registration that morning from 7:00 to 7:45, followed by start time at 8:00 – the cost is $20 for all entries and t-shirts are guaranteed for all early paid registrants by August 18th – awards will be given to the top three in the various age groups – all proceeds from the Grayville Days event will benefit The Guardian Center, a non-profit organization committed to the protection & healing of physically & sexually abused children & their families – based in Carmi, with satellite offices in Robinson, Mt. (OLNEY)  the Richland County Middle School will host an athletic meeting for parents, coaches, and student athletes who plan to participate in Middle School athletics during the upcoming 2017-2018 school year – the meeting is this coming Thursday evening in the RCMS Gymnasium, starting at 6:00 – coaches will also be conducting meetings for their respective sports as well – all are encouraged to attend  :  also, sports physicals for RCMS student athletes will be available on Tuesday night, August 15th, in the Middle School cafeteria, from 6:00 to 8:00 – representatives from Carle Richland Memorial Hospital and from Market Street Medical will be administering the sports physicals at a cost of $25 per student – athletes are reminded that a current physical is needed to take part in try-outs, practices, and/or games

(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball over the weekend – the Cardinals have won two in a row
* the Redbirds beat the Reds Saturday night, 4-1 and won again yesterday over Cincinnati, 13-4
here’s how the other Midwestern teams did on Saturday and Sunday
* those that split two games were the Cubs, Brewers, Pirates, Twins, Astros, Braves, and Rangers
* those that lost two games were the White Sox, Indians, and Tigers
* the Royals were rained out on Saturday, but lost in a single game yesterday
it’s a limited schedule in the Majors tonight with only seven games scheduled
the Cardinals begin a quick two game series tonight in Kansas City against the Royals

 

(OLNEY)  in Summer Swim Team Competition from this past Saturday – the Olney Tigersharks did well
there were five teams that competed at the 2017 Southern Illinois Swim Meet at Millstadt
* the Central Illinois Swim Conference won the event, beating the Midwest Swim Conference, 363.5 to 275
* the Illiana Swim Conference finished in 3rd place, with 195 points
* then the Shawnee Swim Conference in 4th (118) and the Southern Illinois Swim League in 5th (94.5)
there were twenty Tigershark swimmers that helped represent the Illiana Swim Conference
the Olney squad had four high point swimmers in the downstate competition
* Maria Mayorga was first in the 13-14 Year Old Girls Division
* Noah Church was second in the 13-14 Year Old Boys Division
* Landyn Piercefield was third in the 11-12 Year Old Boys Division
* Blair Grove tied for third in the 8 & Under Girls Division
congratulations to Maria Mayorga who set two new meet records at the Southern Illinois Swim Meet
* in the 100 yard intermediate and in the 100 yard breastroke
Olney had four other swimmers who had top finishes at the meet
* Reid Brown, Ari Leslie, Kaylei Eubank, and Carolyn Powell
the twelve other participants from the Olney Tigersharks include the following

the Southern Illinois Swim Meet finishes up the summer swim season for the Olney Tigersharks

(OLNEY)  at the Junior League Baseball Central Regional Tournament in Fort Wayne, Indiana
the eleven teams from the Midwest began action this past weekend in the pool play portion of the tourney
* representing Illinois, Warren Park beat Kentucky, 6-5 on Saturday
* Warren Park won again yesterday by defeating the Indiana team from Washington, 11-0
* the Illinois team from Chicago will now play this morning at 11:00 against the Ohio team
* Warren Park will then finish up their pool play tomorrow against Michigan
then the top eight teams advance into the single elimination round portion of the tournament
* it will be quarter-final action on Wednesday and the finals on Thursday – all up at Fort Wayne

 

(OLNEY)  get ready for Olney Tiger Football this fall at Richland County High School
the IHSA will allow practicing to start today for all football teams around Illinois
* the Olney Tigers will have morning weights & walk-thru’s, then evening practices each day this week
* then the Tigers’ practices will vary into the second week as classes get underway at RCHS next week
“Meet the Tigers Night” is scheduled for Friday night, August 18th, at the RCHS Athletic Field
the Olney Tigers open up their 2017 season a week later on August 25th at home against Lawrenceville

 


                                  LOCAL AND AREA SPORTS REMINDERS

 

(OLNEY)  the 21st Annual Olney Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing is set for this coming Friday at the Richland Country Club in Olney – it’s lunch at 11:30 with tee time at 1:00 – a lunch ticket only is $10 per person while the four person team fee is at $300, which includes lunch, golf carts, and the 18 holes of golf – to sign up or for details, call the Olney Chamber office tomorrow thru Friday at  618-392-2241

(OLNEY)  a note from the Richland County High School – RCHS student athletes that did not get a physical when offered at the high school last spring need to make sure they have a current physical before participating in first day practice today for football and golf and before this coming Wednesday, August 9, for all other fall sports – incoming freshman’s school physicals do count for an athletic physical
