*  the Redbirds knocked off the Nationals last night, 8-1
here’s a look at how the rest of the Midwestern teams did last night

* those that lost were the Pirates, Cubs, Astros, Rangers, and Twins
* The Indians and Tigers game was postponed due to weather
the Cardinals are back in action tonight against the Nationals in St. Louis

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Recreation Council will host its White Squirrel Triathlon on Saturday, August 5th, and the registration now open – the 7th annual event will include a 200 meter swim at the Musgrove Aquatic Center, a 14.6 mile gravel-free bike ride, and a 5 kilometer run – there have been over 250 participates in past years, not to mention the 150-plus local and area volunteers as well – all proceeds help with the local Richland County Recreation Council programs and sponsorships – registration for the 2017 Triathlon is now available online at  www.rcrcolney.com/white-squirrel-triathlon  – sign up today

 

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Athletic Association’s “A League of Our Own” Ladies Fastpitch Softball is looking for teams for upcoming tournaments scheduled for the end of July thru October in Olney – teams must consist of players age freshmen in high school and older – for details, call Ed at  618-320-9590

 

(OLNEY)  the 8th Annual MS “Join the Movement” event is coming up on Saturday, July 29th, at the Richland County Middle School in Olney – it’s all to create a world free from Multiple Sclerosis – the activities begin with the 25 mile Bike Ride at 7:30 that morning, then the 5K MS Challenge Run at 7:35, the 5K Walk at 7:40, and the MS Walk which is Handicap Accessible starts at 7:45 – while the registration fees are waived for all Richland County youth 18 and under by the Carrie Winter Trust, the registration will be available one hour before each event – printable forms are available online at  www.olneyms.org  or on the “Join the Movement” Facebook page – all event participants and the general public are then invited to the Olney VFW for a meal at 5:00 that evening, followed by a live fundraising auction at 6:00 – the meal is by donation at the door, plus carry-outs will be available – all proceeds to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the local MS Chapter – again, for more details, logon at  www.olneyms.org

the Cardinals return home for the first of a three game weekend series against the Nationals tonight
it’s the first of a ten game home stand in St. Louis leading up to the All Star Break on July 10th

(OLNEY)  the Olney TigerSharks had a triangular swim meet this past Tuesday at Mt. Carmel
Olney won the three team event by beating 2nd place Harrisburg, 302 to 215
* the host Wabash Valley Sharks finished in 3rd place with 130 points
the TigerSharks from Olney had thirteen swimmers that won multiple events in their age groups
* Owen Powell won four events in the 15-18 Year Old Boys Division
* Lauren Eagleson won three events in the 15-18 Year Old Girls Division
* Noah Church won four events in the 13-14 Year Old Boys Division
* Carolyn Powell won three events in the 13-14 Year Old Girls Division
* Kaylei Eubank won three events in the 13-14 Year Old Girls Division
* Landyn Piercefield won three events in the 11-12 Year Old Boys Division
* Bree Holdren won three events in the 11-12 Year Old Girls Division
* Danielle Brown won three events in the 11-12 Year Old Girls Division
* Ari Leslie won three events in the 10 & Under Girls Division
* Carly Houchin won two events in the 10 & Under Girls Division
* Blair Grove won three events in the 8 & Under Girls Division
* Julius Guzman won three events in the 6 & Under Boys Division
* Korynn Snider won three events in the 6 & Under Girls Division
Olney had three swimmers that won single events in their respective age groups
* Taegan Garner, Graham Patterson, and Drake Holdren
the TigerSharks won seven of the seventeen medley relays at the swim meet
the Olney swimmers are back in action Saturday, July 8th, at the McLeansboro Invitational

(OLNEY/NEWTON)  the Illinois High School Association has released the 2017 football schedules
both Newton and Olney will be opening up their seasons with home matchups on Friday, August 25th
* the defending LIC Champions from Newton will host Georgetown – Ridge Farm on that Friday night
* the Tigers, who finished tied for 3rd in the LIC last year, will begin LIC action against Lawrenceville
both Head Coaches are returning for another season at their respective schools
* Coach Jason Fulton begins his 11th year at Newton, coming in with an overall record at 51-46
* Coach Matt Music starts his 7th season at Olney, entering the 2017 season with an overall mark at 32-27
as always, the schedules are reversed from a year ago
* Newton has home LIC games with Lawrenceville, Robinson, Flora, and Olney
* the Eagles will travel to Casey-Westfield, Bridgeport (Red Hill), Marshall, and Paris
* Olney has home conference games with Lawrenceville, Paris, Robinson, and Casey-Westfield
* the Tigers travel to Bridgeport (Red Hill), Marshall, Flora, and Newton
* Olney’s non-conference game have the Tigers traveling to Bethalto Civic Memorial
while one team looks to repeat last year’s conference play, the other looks to improve from a year ago
* Newton won the LIC crown by going undefeated at 8-0 – the Eagles were 11-1 overall on the year
* Olney ended LIC play at 5-3, in a three way tie for 3rd, while finishing the year overall at 5-5
* the Marshall Lions were 2nd in the LIC last year at 7-1 in the conference and 8-2 overall
* Flora and Red Hill were 5-3 in the LIC a year ago – the Wolves were 6-4 overall, the Salukis were 6-5
* the Lawrenceville Indians were 6th in the league at 3-6, finishing the year overall at 3-5
* the Paris Tigers finished 7th in the Little Illini Conference at 1-7 as they ended up at 2-7 on the year
* Robinson & Casey-Westfield ended at 1-7 in the LIC – the Maroons were 2-7 overall, the Warriors at 1-8

(OLNEY)  the Olney Invitational Swim Meet was held Saturday at the Musgrove Aquatic Center
the Effingham Red Tide won the 12-team event by beating out the host TigerSharks, 980 to 925
* Charleston was 3rd, followed by Fairfield, Harrisburg, Marshall, and Greene County, Indiana
* then Evansville, Carmi, Wabash Valley (Mt. Carmel), McLeansboro, and Mt. Vernon, Indiana
out of 250 total swimmers in 26 different categories, Olney had 35 top five finishes overall
the Olney TigerSharks had seven swimmers finishing 1st with high points in their age group
* Owen Powell in the 16 & Under Boys with 36 total points
* Noah Church in the 14 & Under Boys with 36 total points
* Maria Mayorga in the 14 & Under Girls with 34 total points
* Landyn Piercefield in the 12 & Under Boys with 32 total points
