(OLNEY)  in spring training baseball yesterday : the Cardinals played Atlanta to a 1-1 tie, while the Cubs & White Sox both lost : coming up today – the Cardinals again play the Atlanta Braves, while the Cubs’ split-squads will play the Oakland A's and the Colorado Rockies : meahwhile, the White Sox are idle today
 
(OLNEY)  in high school basketball news – the East Richland School Board voted 6 to 0 with one abstention, to dismiss Brent McKinney as ERHS Health Teacher & as Head Coach of the Olney Lady Tigers at the end of this school year – during his four years at ERHS, Coach McKinney won 88 games compared to 45 losses – among that 88 wins, that included 76 wins in the past three years after the Lady Tigers were 12&18 in McKinney's first year – that's an average of 25 wins in each of the last three years – under Coach McKinney, the Lady Tigers finished fourth in the 2009 Class 2A State Tournament, had two Sectional Championships, three Regional Championships, & two Apollo Conference Titles – McKinney's wife, Cindy, was also dismissed as a District employee as well – the best of luck to both in the future
 
(OLNEY)  the East Richland High School held it's winter sports awards ceremony last Thursday night – while no awards were presented, the ERHS Dance Team was recognized by Coach Tessa Dicks : a special note of the senior dancers was make, recognizing Whitney Bunting, Hannah Hixon, Kim Race, Merissa Smashey, & Mariah Hargraves : also noted were juniors Theresa Waxler & Hannah Beal, plus freshman Alica Ann Hostetter : a job well done this past year by the Dance Team at East Richland High School

* Dawson Verhines of Woodlawn is the 2010-2011 Player of the Year

(OLNEY)  in womens college basketball – five Big Ten teams were selected last night to take part in the 2011 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship – both Ohio State & Michigan State were chosen as #4 seeds, while Iowa & Penn State were each selected as #6 seeds – Purdue is a #9 seed – ERHS graduate Brittany Johnson & her fellow Buckeyes will open up this Saturday in the Dayton Region

(OLNEY)  in junior college baseball, OCC finished its "spring break trip" with four more wins last week :
* on Thursday, the Blue Knights swept a doubleheader : OCC beat West Moreland Community College, 7-2 : then the Blue Knights beat Ulster Community College, 8-3
* on Friday, the Blue Knights swept two more : OCC beat Owens Community College, 6-2 : then the Blue Knights again beat West Moreland Community College, 12-0
* winning 9 games & losing only 1 on the trip, the Blue Knights are now 18&3 on the year – they're back in action this Wednesday traveling to McKendree University – OCC opens their GRAC schedule on the 24th
 
(OLNEY)  in juinor college softball, OCC finished its "spring break trip" by splitting two games last week :
* on Friday : the Lady Blue Knights beat Lincoln College, 4-3 : then the Lady Blue Knights lost to Owens Community College, 4-1
* OCC returns home with a trip record of 5&3 – and now at 7&5 on the year, the Lady Blue Knights open their GRAC schedule at home this coming Thursday with Lincoln Trail on the OCC Softball Field in Olney
 
(NEWTON)  in mens college basketball, the Big Ten Tournament ended yesterday in Indianapolis :
* in Saturday's semi-finals : Ohio State beat Michigan, 68-61 : Penn State beat Michigan State, 61-48
* in Sunday's championship game : Ohio State beat Penn State, 72-60
 
(NEWTON)  meanwhile, a record-tying seven Big Ten teams were selected to play in the 2011 NCAA Tournament : league Champs Ohio State is an overall #1 seed : Purdue is a #3 seed : Wisconsin is a #4 seed : Michigan is a #8 seed : Illinois is a #9 seed : & Michigan State & Penn State are both #10 seeds : the Fighting Illini will face #8 UNLV this Friday – it's the first Illinois trip to the NCAA dance since 2009
 
(OLNEY)  the IHSA Boys Class 1A and 2A State Tournaments ended on Saturday :
* Class 1A : Newark won the state championship, beating Winchester West Central, 57-35
* Class 1A : Woodlawn won the third place game, beating Mackinaw Deer Creek, 52-37
* Class 2A : Chicago Hales Franciscan won the state championship, beating Murphysboro, 61-47
* Class 2A : Rockford Christian won the third place game, beating Pittsfield, 44-38
 
(NEWTON)  the IHSA Class A and Class AA Scholastic Bowl Sectionals were Saturday :
* Class A @ Fairfield : the Cumberland Pirates won all three matches over Mt Carmel, Effingham St Anthony, & Greenville, to win the Sectional Championship, now advancing to State
* Class A @ Herrin : the host Tigers won all three matches over Nashville, Breese Central, & Johnston City, to win the Sectional Championship, now advancing to State
all Sectional winners move on into the Class A and Class AA State Tournaments this Saturday in Peoria

(NEWTON)  in high school track, both the Newton Eagles and Lady Eagles were scheduled to open up their 2011 seasons at the SIU Indoor Event down in Carbondale with the girls last Friday & the boys on Saturday – no results are available to us at this time – we hope to have them for you later this week

(OLNEY)  most of the spring high school softball and baseball schedules will kick into gear this week, with most all other local sports’ schedules active by the end of next week.

(NOBLE)  in action today : the Noble/Clay City Lady Cats are scheduled to open their softball season today against Webber Township & that game will now be played at West Richland High School in Noble, starting at 4:15 : today's baseball game, Noble at Webber Township, has been cancelled due to wet field conditions

*  7th seeded Michigan State upset 2nd seeded Purdue, 74-56
*  6th seeded Penn State upset 3rd seeded Wisconsin, 36-33

*  8th seeded Northwestern beat #9 Minnesota, 75-65
*  7th seeded Michigan State beat #10 Iowa, 66-61
*  6th seeded Penn State beat #11 Indiana, 61-55
the tournament in Indianapolis continues with quarter-final action on this Friday :
*  top-seeded Ohio State and #8 Northwestern play at 11:00 this morning
*  4th seeded Michigan and #5 Illinois will hook up at around 1:30 this afternoon
*  2nd seeded Purdue plays #7 Michigan State at 5:30 last this evening

* Class 2A : none of our area athletes advanced to the final four shootout coming up tonight at 8:00 : the only downstate shooter moving on is Trenton Easley, a West Frankfort sophomore, who made 12 of 15 three pointers : Lawrenceville's Michael Leighty and Mt Carmel's Austin Anderson each made 8, while Effingham St Anthony's James Jansen made 5 in the preliminary round as all three did not advance
* Class 1A : two of our area athletes advanced to this afternoon's final four shooting : Woodlawn's Christian Hollenkamp made 11, while Hutsonville's Jerry Wilson made 9 : Altamont's Brock Ledbetter just missed out on advancing by only making 8 in the prelimary round held last night at Carver Arena

(NOBLE)  the Midland Trail Conference Girls All Conference Team has been announced : named as the MTC Player of the Year was Woodlawn’s sophomore standout guard, Alexa Capps : others selected to the Team were Leah Sutton & Whitney Lowery of Woodlawn, Alyse Cox & Andrea Buhrman of North Clay, Brooke Rhodes of Sandoval, Megan Withrow & Tori Withrow of Wayne City, Chynna Byars of Cisne, & Ashley Pollard of South Central : those with Honorable Mentions were Erin Taylor of Noble/Clay City, Sarah Ganieany & Hailey Martin both of Webber, Tori Logue of South Central, & Morgan Healy of North Clay : this year’s MTC Coach of the Year was awarded to Eric Helbig of Woodlawn

(NOBLE)  let’s look at the final standings for the Girls Midland Trail Conference season which included several cancelled games during the last week of the regular season : it was North Clay winning the MTC crown with a conference record of 6&0 : Woodlawn finished a close 2nd at 5&1 : then Wayne City at 5&2 : followed by Sandoval in 4th place at 4&2 : South Central was 5th at 2&4 : Noble / Clay City was 6th at 1&4 : then Cisne at 1&5 : and Webber Township at 0&5 : we’ll look at the Boys MTC stuff coming up next week

(OLNEY)  in junior high wrestling news – the Olney Cubs Wrestling Club ended its winter season last Sunday at the Vandalia Sectional – all eleven wrestlers from Olney were eliminated from competition, but all had some of their best matches of the year, falling short of qualifying for State – all in all, a successful first season, as the Wrestling Cubs produced 3 tournament champions & the 11 that qualified for Sectional

(OLNEY)  in junior college softball from earlier this week – Olney Central College won four games out of six played on their “spring break trip” down to South Carolina :
*  the Lady Blue Knights split a doubleheader on Monday after being rained out Sunday : OCC lost to Owens Community College of Ohio, 5-2 : OCC then beat Lincoln College, 8-1
*  the Lady Blue Knights swept two on Tuesday : OCC beat Community College of Beaver County, Pennsylvania, 11-1 : OCC then beat Penn College of Pennsylvania, 9-0
*  the Lady Blue Knights split two yesterday : OCC beat Sauk Valley of Illinois, 6-1 : OCC then lost a close one to Owen Community College of Ohio, 5-4
*  OCC's top hitters included Emily Phillips, Krystal Welch, Julia Camp, & Kourtney Crockett : OCC's winning pitchers were Mackenzie Thomas, Samantha Tomasino, Taylor Hueston, & Braddi Reed
*  now at 6&4 on the year, the Lady Blue Knights are scheduled for a doubleheader today & a single rescheduled game from Sunday tomorrow – the OCC Ladies will return home over the weekend

the Sectional Championship games will be tomorrow night
 
(NEWTON)  while the IHSA Boys Class 1A and 2A State Tournaments begin with semi-final action tomorrow up in Carver Arena in Peoria, the Country Financial Three-Point Showdown preliminary round will be this afternoon at 5:00 – here’s some area shooters taking part in each class of competition :
* Class 2A : among the 32 shooters : senior James Jansen of Effingham St Anthony : senior Austin Anderson of Mt Carmel : senior Michael Leighty of Lawrenceville : senior Jared Linton of Carlyle
* Class 1A : among the 32 shooters : junior Jerry Wilson of Hutsonville : senior Brock Ledbetter of Altamont : junior Christian Hollenkamp of Woodlawn : junior Alex Corrington of Okaw Valley
the top four shooters in each class will move on to the finals later this weekend

(OLNEY)  congratulations to a couple of local swimmers who competed for the Vincennes Swim Team last weekend at the Southwest Indiana Divisional Championships held at Castle High School in Newburgh :
*  Owen Powell had three 1st place finishes for Boys 10&Under : 50 yard freestyle, 50 yard breaststroke, and 100 yard freestyle : also 2nd in the 50 yard butterfly and 3rd in the 200 yard freestyle : now qualifies for six events at the Indiana Swimming Age Group State Championships next weekend up in Indianapolis
*  Payton Blakney had two top ten finishes for Girls 14&Under : 6th in the 200 yard butterfly and 10th in the 100 yard butterfly : also 11th in the 200 yard individual medley and 23rd in the 50 yard freestyle
*  fellow Tigersharks from Olney swam this winter for Vincennes, including Elyse Eagleson, Hannah Gillis, Morgan Gillis, Alicia Guzman, Jadyn Holubek, Eduardo Mayorga, Maria Mayorga, & Carolyn Powell
*  Maria Mayorga was the high point winner for 8&Under’s at the Southern Indiana Swim Conference Meet 
*  Carolyn Powell was the high point winner for 8&Under’s at the Seymour Winter Classic : congratulations

(OLNEY)  the 2011 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament gets underway today up in Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis – the three first round games include : #8 Northwestern against #9 Minnesota at 1:30 today : #7 Michigan State against #10 Iowa at around 4:00 : then #6 Penn State against #11 Indiana at 6:30 tonight : the second of four games tomorrow has 5th seeded Illinois against #4 Michigan – game time at around 1:30

(OLNEY)  the East Richland High School will hold its “winter sports awards night” this evening at 7:00 in the Sliva Auditorium at ERHS – sports being recognized includes boys’ wrestling, cheerleading, girls’ basketball, boys’ basketball, & dance team – all participants & family members are urged to attend

(NOBLE)  the Noble/Clay City Softball team has a mandatory parent’s meeting tonight at the West Richland High School Commons Area in Noble, starting at 6:00 – parents of all girls playing softball this spring should attend or call Coach Zurliene at WRHS – team information & school policy to be discussed
