(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball Monday – the Cardinals won – the Reds beat the Cubs – the White Sox lost  :  coming up tonight – Cardinals host the Phillies – Cubs are in Cincinnati – White Sox host Texas
 
(OLNEY)  in junior college baseball yesterday – the NJCAA Region 24 Tournament came to an end as 4th-seeded John A Logan upset top-seeded Wabash Valley – on their home field in Carterville, the Volunteers won the suspended game from Sunday afternoon, 14-8 – then in the first championship game, John A Logan beat the defending Region 24 Champions, 2-1 – John A Logan now prepares to host the Northern District Tournament this weekend, on Saturday & Sunday with other teams from Northern Illinois and Iowa
 
(OLNEY)  in high school softball yesterday – Olney won it's first round regional game over Mt Carmel, 9-1 – Elizabeth Walker was the winning pitcher allowing only one earned run & striking out nine – the Lady Tigers’ top hitters were Rachel Wisner with three hits & two RBI, and four players, Madison Weems, Madison Doan, Elizabeth Walker, & Kelsey Shipman, all with one hit & one RBI each – now at 17&15, the Lady Tigers will play Carmi in a regional semi-final game tomorrow at 4:30 in Mt Carmel
 
(NEWTON)  in boys high school baseball yesterday – Newton edged out Neoga, 12-11 as the host Eagles outhit the Indians, 20 to 15 – Clayton Bailey was the winning pitcher – the Eagles’ top hitters were Mark Mammoser & Peyton Wyatt each with four hits & two RBI, Taylor Kerner had two hits & two RBI, and it was Derek Casey, Scott Jansen & A.J. Hyatt each with two hits apiece – ending the regular season with a record of 14&15, Newton will host Flora in the second regional semi-final game tomorrow evening at 6:30
 
(OLNEY)  also in high school baseball – Olney came from behind to beat Centralia, 4-2 in eight innings – Kellen Kocher was the winning pitcher – the top Olney hitters were Cody Holmes, Mitchell Kocher, & Dallas Peck, all with two hits each – the Tigers finish their regular season with a record of 20&11 and will now play Robinson tomorrow afternoon at the Newton Regional, a semi-final game beginning at 4:00

(OLNEY)  in junior college golfing news – Rend Lake College sits in sixth place after the first round of the NJCAA Women’s Golf National Championships down in Daytona Beach, Florida – Daytona State College currently leads the 19-team field – Rend Lake is ranked fourth in the nation with its Region 24 Title  :  also, the men’s team at Rend Lake tees off today at the NJCAA Men’s DII National Golf Championships down in Scottsboro, Alabama – the Warriors are ranked 20th in the nation going into today’s first round action

(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball over the weekend – the Cardinals dropped two to the Reds – the Cubs lost one to the Giants, then a rain out yesterday – the White Sox split two with Oakland : coming up tonight – the Cardinals host the Phillies – the Cubs are in Cincinnati – the White Sox are at home with the Rangers
 
(OLNEY)  in junior college baseball over the weekend – the NJCAA Region 24 Tournament had its three games cancelled Saturday and moved to yesterday, although all the games included on-and-off light rain and drizzle – it was not a good day for the OCC Blue Knights, who entered the tournament as the #2 seed :
*  in yesterday's first game  :  John A Logan beat Olney Central, 6-1 as the Blue Knights left 13 runners on base & on eight occasions, left a runner in scoring position – the Volunteers only outhit OCC, 9 to 8
*  in game two  :  top-seeded Wabash Valley eliminated Olney Central College, 8-0 in seven innings – while commiting five errors in the field, the Blue Knights left nine more runners on base including the bases loaded in the 5th inning – but the Blue Knights finish the year with an impressive overall record of 43 wins, 17 losses, and one tie, finishing just a game back of the GRAC championship with 21 wins and 10 losses
*  in game three  :  John A Logan was leading Wabash Valley, 8-5 in the bottom of the 4th inning when the game was suspended due to rain – the game will resume where it left off at 12:00 noon today with the first championship game to follow at around 2:30 or 3:00 – if another game is needed, it’ll be tomorrow at noon
 
(OLNEY)  congrats to the Apollo Conference Tournament Champs from Olney, as the Tennis Tigers hosted & won the event this past Friday & Saturday – Olney finished with 26.5 points, with Charleston ending up in second place with 19 points – just a single point back in third place was Robinson at 18, then Effingham at 16.5 – rounding out the remaining teams were Mt Zion, Paris, Salem, & Newton – the Olney results :
* for the second year in a row, Olney's Dylan Prosser was the Apollo “singles champion” – he beat players from Newton, Effingham (quarter-final), Robinson (semi-final) and Effingham (championship)
* also in singles competition – Olney's Levi Weiler finished tied for fifth – he beat a player from Salem, then after losing to Robinson (quarter-final), he won back-to-back matches against Paris and Mt Zion
* the doubles pair of Blayd Beck & Jordan Atwood finished 2nd in the doubles competition : they beat Paris, then Effingham (quarter-final), then Robinson (semi-final), but then lost Charleston in the title match
* the doubled pair of Nick Kuhl & Austin Zwilling ended up 3rd in the doubles : they beat a pair from Paris, then beat Effingham (quarter-final), then lost to Charleston (semi-final), before beating Robinson
* as a result, five Olney Tigers were named to the All Conference Team – they include Dylan Prosser, Blayd Beck, Jordan Atwood, Nick Kuhl, & Austin Zwilling

(NEWTON)  at the Boys Apollo Conference Tournament last Friday & Saturday – Olney won the event, followed by Charleston, Robinson, Effingham, Mt Zion, Paris, Salem, & Newton – the Eagles’ lone Apollo winning match came from the pair of Logan Andrews & Matt Schryock – tip of the hat to the Tennis Eagles

(ROBINSON)  the IHSA Girls Class 1A Track & Field Sectionals were Friday at Robinson :
*  Newton brought home another Sectional Championship as the Lady Eagles outscored second place Teutopolis, 90 to 78.5 – host Robinson finished third, followed by Mt Carmel, Effingham St Anthony, Oblong, Olney, & Red Hill rounding out the top eight – of the 18 different events, Newton had two wins & five second’s – the Olney Lady Tigers won three events with no second’s – Oblong took home two victories – the top two in each event advance to next weekend's State Meet in Charleston :
* Newton's Maura Cummins won the high jump
* Newton's Carly Niebrugge, Jackie Michl, Jamie Michl, & Lisa Frichtl won the 3200 meter relay

(NOBLE)  in high school baseball from late last week – Noble/Clay City beat Edwards County, 6-4 – Jordan Brown was the winning pitcher with a complete game victory, allowing only four hits – the Wildcat's top hitters were Jason Tolliver with three hits & two RBI, Austin Manuel with two hits & the game winning RBI, and Matt Dasch with two hits – now at 3&14, Noble/Clay City begins regional action today

(OLNEY)  in high school softball yesterday – Olney lost to Cumberland, 5-3 in eight innings – while taking the loss, Elizabeth Walker allowed no earned runs & struck out four, but the Lady Tigers' defense committed eigth errors – Elizabeth Walker had two hits & a RBI, Rachel Wisner had a double & two RBI, and Madison Doan had a hit & run scored – the Lady Tigers fall back to 16&15 to end the regular season – Olney will host Mt Carmel next Monday in a regional first round game in Olney, starting at 4:30

(OLNEY)  the NJCAA Region 24 Baseball Tournament Finals start today with three games down at John A Logan College in Carterville – second-seeded Olney Central College will play fourth-seeded John A Logan at 10:00 this morning – then the loser of that game plays top-seeded Wabash Valley at 1:00 this afternoon – the first game winner will play Wabash at 4:00 later this afternoon – the two remaining teams will play at 12 noon tomorrow – then a final championship game will be played at around 4:00 tomorrow, if needed

(OLNEY)  in high school baseball yesterday – Olney lost to Teutopolis, 10-0 as the defending Class 2A State Champions outhit the visiting Tigers, 11 to 3 – Olney's three hits came from Kellen Kocher, Mitchell Kocher, & Dallas Peck – the Tigers drop to 19&11 on the year and will finish their 2011 regular season schedule on the road to Centralia next Monday – Teutopolis improves to a yearly mark of 24&2

(NEWTON)  in high school baseball yesterday – Newton beat Casey-Westfield, 8-6 in nine innings – the top Lady Eagle hitters were Nichole Schackmann with five singles, plus Hillary Keller & Erica Earnest with three hits each – Newton’s winning pitcher was Keidrah Hardiek allowing only three earned runs in the nine innings & striking out eight – the Lady Eagles now prepare for their regional opener next Tuesday
 
(ROBINSON)  the IHSA Girls Class 1A Track & Field Sectionals are today at various sites round the state – most all of our area teams are among the 18 teams taking part at the Robinson Sectional, with the field events at 4:00 and preliminary races at 4:30 – among the teams are Newton & Olney, plus others from Mt Carmel to Teutopolis, from Vandalia to Lawrenceville – the first & second place finishers in each event advance on to the State Track Meet next Thursday, Friday, & Saturday at O’Brien Stadium in Charleston
 
(NEWTON)  in auto racing news – the next round of the 2011 AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Series will be a week from tonight at the Bloomington, Indiana Speedway – this year's top four racers so far are Bryan Clauson, Hunter Schuerenberg, Levi Jones, and Damion Gardner, all seperated by only seven points entering the May 20th race in Bloomington – so far this spring, four out of the past five scheduled AMSOIL USAC races have been cancelled due to rain and wet grounds over the past eight weeks

(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball on Wednesday – the Cardinals lost to the Cubs after a lengthy rain delay in Chicago – the White Sox & the Reds both lost  :  coming up this afternoon – the Cardinals finish their series in Chicago against the Cubs – both the White Sox and Reds are idle until tomorrow night

(OLNEY)  in high school baseball yesterday – Olney beat South Central, 3-0 – a one hour, 19 minute game with no walks & ten combined strike outs – Olney’s Kellen Kocher threw 76 pitches for the seven inning victory – the Cougar’s Derek Harmier threw 75 pitches in his first loss of the year – the top Tiger hitters were Mitchell Kocher, Kellen Kocher, & Brook Pampe – now at 19&10, Olney travels to Teutopolis for a battle today against the Wooden Shoes – Olney will try to avenge a 7-3 loss from earlier this year in Olney

(OLNEY)  in high school softball yesterday – Olney beat Mt Carmel, 14-3 as the Lady Tigers outhit the host Lady Aces, 14 to 10 – Elizabeth Walker was Olney’s winning pitcher, allowing only one earned run & striking out eight – the top Lady Tiger hitters were Madison Doan, Rachel Wisner, & Makenzie Sechrest, each with three hits, scoring a combined five runs with a combined eight RBI – now at 16&12 overall, the Lady Tigers will finish their Apollo schedule by hosting Mt Zion this afternoon at ERHS with the first game at 3:00 – the jv Lady Tigers will also host Mt Zion with two games starting at 3:00 in the Olney City Park

(NEWTON)  in high school softball yesterday – Newton swept an Apollo doubleheader from Paris, winning 13-3 and 12-2, both games in five innings – the winning pitchers were Samantha Dart & Keidrah Hardiek – the top Newton hitters were Megan Jansen, Mallory Kocher, Hillary Keller, & Erica Earnest – the Lady Eagles end the Apollo season with a 9&5 record & will finish the regular season at Casey-Westfield today

(NOBLE)  also in high school softball yesterday – Wayne City beat Noble/Clay City, 1-0 in Midland Trail Conference Tournament action – the Tournament continues with more action today & tomorrow in Noble

(OLNEY)  in high school baseball yesterday – Charleston clinched the 2011 Apollo Conference Baseball title with a doubleheader sweep of Mt Zion, 7-6 and 12-8 – the Trojans finish with a league record of 13&1

(OLNEY)  the Richland County Softball League is looking for teams to fill the 2011 schedule – the entry fee is at $200 per team with the regular season set to start June 13th and an entry deadline of May 27th – teams outside of Richland County are welcome, especially those from Jasper & Clay Counties – the League will also be hosting a Pre-Season Tournament on Saturday, June 4th, at the City of Olney’s Musgrove Park Ball Diamond – all teams, including those from outside of Olney, are welcome with an entry fee of $150 per team – for more details on the League and/or Tournament, call Ed at 618-837-0662 – that’s 618-837-0662

(NEWTON)  It's baseball for the blind on display this weekend – the RHI X-Treme, a downstate Illinois team of the National Beep Baseball Association, will host a demonstration game & fundraiser at the Newton Community High School this Saturday, starting at 12 noon – Beep Baseball is an adaptive version of our national pastime for people without vision – with a ball that beeps and bases that buzz, blind and visually impaired athletes use their ears and just a few sighted volunteers to play the game – the RHI X-Treme is a traveling team with local participants, including David Benny of Newton & Clinton Woodard of Willow Hill, looking to raise funds to help with the inaugural season of traveling to tournaments in Indianapolis, Chicago,Wichita, & Cleveland – the Saturday event will also include a porkburger sale & a 50/50 raffle, plus folks will have a chance to be blindfolded & feel what it's like to play Beep Baseball at NCHS.

(OLNEY)  new Olney Tiger Head Football Coach Matt Music will be in Olney tomorrow evening to conduct a player / parent meeting for all ERHS football players or those interested – the meeting will start at 6:00 in the ERHS Sliva Auditorium – all high school football players & their parents are strongly encouraged to attend the Friday night meeting at ERHS – that’s with new Football Coach Matt Music
