(OLNEY)  With a surface high pressure in place out to our west, we’ll stay dry today, although more clouds will build in as we move thru this Saturday – but our weather will change as a short wave & associated low pressure system will move thru with rain chances thru tomorrow & tomorrow night, maybe as early as later tonight – then we are dry for at least the first half of next week – stay tuned for continued weather updates.

 

(NEWTON)  In state news – the Governor’s office of the Illinois Bicentennial, in partnership with the State Agriculture Department, the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild, and the Associated Beer Distributors of Illinois, will host a craft beer competition at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield this year, running August 11-13 – to highlight the robust craft  beer industry and “Illinois Made” products, Illinoisans will be able to celebrate the 200th Birthday of the state with an Official Bicentennial Craft Beer – the winner will be determined by a vote of State Fair attendees who sample the offerings, plus a panel of craft beer experts – at least 18 brewers are scheduled to compete, including 4 from the downstate areas of Metropolis, Breese, O’Fallon, and Alton.

 

(OLNEY)  The Illinois Farm Bureau is encouraging farmers to sign a petition supporting a proposed federal rule to repeal the definition of “waters of the U.S.” put in place under President Obama’s administration – the proposed rule, initiated by the EPA and Army Corps of Engineers, was officially published last week, kicking off a 30-day comment period with a deadline set for August 28th – to sign the petition, folks can go to the Illinois Farm Bureau’s Action Center online, at  www.ilfb.org/actioncenter  – farmers and others will also have a chance to sign the petition at the Illinois State Fair, August 10th thru 20th, in Springfield.

 

(OLNEY)  Here’s a reminder from the Richland County High School – that senior parking permits will be sold on a first come, first served basis, this next Monday, August 7th, in the RCHS office, from 8:00 to 2:00 – the junior parking permits will then be sold the following day, on Tuesday, August 8th, also from 8:00 to 2:00, first come, first served – then beginning next Wednesday, parking permits will be sold during regular RCHS office hours – once school begins on August 16th, all permits must be purchased in the RCHS office either before or after school – the cost of a parking permit at Richland County High School is $25 per car.

 

(NEWTON/OLNEY)  All area blood donors are encouraged to get out and give blood at their next chance – here’s the list of all upcoming regional blood drives  :  today at the Blood Donation Center in Effingham from 7:45 to 2:45  :  also today at the Elm Street Christian Church in Olney from 10:00 to 2:00  :  next Monday at the Christian Church Annex in Mason from 2:00 to 6:00  :  next Thursday at the KC Hall in Newton from 1:00 to 6:00  :  all blood types & platelets are very much needed to replenish low supplies.

    The Holy Cross Parish Picnic is tomorrow in Wendelin – the chicken dinner sales start at 10:45 in the morning, on a first come, first serve basis – the serving line runs from 11:00 to 5:00, plus a lunch stand will also serve pork burgers, brats, ice cream, soft drinks, & more – also a country store, beer garden, bingo, cake stand, afternoon pedal tractor pulls, a 50/50 drawing, & entertainment thru the day and evening

    The White Squirrel Saddle Club has its annual Tractor Show today at the East Fork Arena north of Olney, this year featuring Farmall & International tractors, plus small engines, garden tractors, & more – gates open at 8:00 with registration til 10:00, flea market at 9:00, Parade of Power at 1:30, food & more

    The Richland County ABATE invites all street legal vehicles to a fundraising ride today with sign up from 9:00 to 10:45 at the Olney VFW – then followed by a dinner and live auction later this evening at the Olney VFW – all proceeds will stay locally to help families battling cancer

    The Grove Center Community Wide Garage Sales are this morning from now until 12:00 noon – pork burgers will be available for purchase at the Community Center – that’s at the Grove Township Community Center, southeast of Montrose in Jasper County, plus at area homes throughout the region as well

    Also today, the Dundas Community has a Yard Sale – the Dundas Ruritan Club is providing the pavilions for use – plus several homes in Dundas will use their locations for yard sales – a lot of nice items available

(OLNEY)  the Summer Swim Team Competition will come to an end for local athletes this weekend
the Southern Illinois All Star Swim Meet will be held tomorrow in Millstadt
* the best of luck to the 20 Olney Tigersharks that will be making the trip to compete
* they’ll not only represent Olney, but also the Illiana Swim Conference as well
* there will also be swimmers from the other Illiana Conference swim teams taking part

(OLNEY)  the 11 Year Old State Little League Tournament will finish up this week in Streamwood, Illinois
congratulations to our local 11 Year Old All Stars from Olney who had a good postseason
* the Olney 11U team was not only the District One Champions, but also the Sub State Champs as well
* the local squad ran up against two tough teams at the State Tournament and was eliminated
* the All Stars from Olney and Richland County finish up with 6 wins and the 2 State Tournament losses

* the Redbirds lost their first of an eight game road trip, falling at Milwaukee by one run, 3-2

the Cardinals are back in action tonight with game two of three in Milwaukee against the Brewers

 

(OLNEY)  the Junior League State Baseball Tournament ended this past Sunday at Rock Falls, Illinois
the Olney All Stars came up short in their effort to repeat as State Champions, ending the summer at 7-2
* Olney won the Sub State Round Robin Tournament in Orion by winning all four games
* Olney won three & lost two at the State Tournament, including the second title game lost in extra innings
here’s a look at some of the team highlights involving the nine all-star and postseason games
* with a .364 batting average as a team, the Olney All Stars outscored their opponents, 105 to 17
* the Olney All Star pitching had an overall Earned Run Average (ERA) of under 1.00, at just over 0.750
* the Olney pitching gave up 30 hits, while striking out 68 opponents and walking only 19
* the Olney hitters banged out 95 hits while drawing 60 base on balls and striking out only 32 times
here’s some of the individual highlights over the nine games
* Braden Flanagan led the pitching, allowing no earned runs, 4 walks, and 25 strikeouts in 13 innings
* Trevor Zuber had 21 innings pitched, allowing only 2 earned runs, while walking 11 and striking out 28
* Cole Lambird threw 4 innings and Jace Greenwood threw 3 and a third, both with no earned runs allowed
* Quinn Miller also was good in relief, pitching 7 innings, allowing 3 earned runs and striking out 6
* Gavin Dorn led Olney at the plate with 18 hits, including 1 home run, 6 doubles, and a team high 17 RBI
* Zach Duenas had 15 RBI with 8 hits, including one double and a sacrifice fly
* Jace Greenwood had 9 hits, 10 RBI, and 12 runs scored
* Trevor Zuber had 10 hits, including a double, plus 12 runs scored and 7 RBI
* Braden Flanagan led the team with 18 runs scored, 10 walks, 9 hits, and 7 RBI
* Cole Lambird had 7 hits and 8 RBI
* Ethan Rodgers had 7 hits and 6 runs scored
* Logan McVicker, Gage Stevens, and Jarrett Fuson each had several hits and several stolen bases
* another player was Isaac Bradley, who unfortunately sat out the State Tournament due to a broken wrist
* the team was managed by Tony Duenas with Assistant Coaches Frank Bradley and Marc Rodgers
although there’s no repeat championship and no return to the Region Tournament, still a job well done

the IHSA will allow practicing to start next Monday, August 7th, for all football teams around Illinois
* the Olney Tigers will have morning weights & walk-thru’s, then evening practices each day next week
* then the Tigers’ practices will vary into the second week as classes get underway at RCHS
Meet the Tigers Night will be two weeks from this Friday night, August 18th, at the RCHS Athletic Field
the Olney Tigers open up their 2017 season a week later on August 25th at home against Lawrenceville

the Illinois Football team opened the 2017 training camp this week at the U of  I Campus Recreation Fields
* just blocks from Memorial Stadium, the daily training camps now thru August 19th are open to the public

* the Fighting Illini open their football schedule at home against Ball State on September 2nd
the Illinois Men’s Basketball team schedule is now set as it was officially released this past Monday
* season tickets for Illini Hoops are now available with various packages to choose from

the Illinois Women’s Basketball team schedule has also been officially announced
* season tickets for the 2017-2018 season will go on sale next month, in September

the Redbirds are back in action tonight starting a three game series in Milwaukee against the Brewers

 

(OLNEY)  in Summer Swim Team Competition – the Olney Tigersharks won again last Saturday
the Olney swimmers won the Illiana Conference Championship by beating five other teams
* the Tigersharks beat out host Harrisburg, 665 to 481 while Fairfield finished third with 306 points
* Carmi was fourth with 280 points, followed by Wabash Valley (110) and McLeansboro (73)
Olney was led by five Tigersharks that won their respective age division
* Owen Powell won the 18 & Under Boys Division with 28 points
* Noah Church won the 14 & Under Boys Divsion with 28 points
* Maria Mayorga won the 14 & Under Girls Division with 28 points
* Reid Brown won the 8 & Under Boys Division with 23 points
* Blair Grove won the 8 & Under Girls Division with 28 points
there were seven Tigersharks that had second place finishes overall
* Dylan Jones in the 18 & Under Boys Division with 22 points
* Lauren Eagleson in the 18 & Under Girls Division with 22 points
* Kaylei Eubank in the 14 & Under Girls Division with 22 points
* Landyn Piercefield in the 12 & Under Boys Division with 24 points
* Danielle Brown in the 12 & Under Girls Division with 24 points
* Ari Leslie in the 10 & Under Girls Division with 22 points
* Julius Guzman in the 6 & Under Boys Division with 15 points
Olney also had two swimmers that ended up in third place overall
* Carolyn Powell in the 14 & Under Girls Division with 20 points

three Tigersharks finished in fourth place in their respective age group
* Gabriel Guzman in the 10 & Under Boys Division with 15 points
* Judah Dicks in the 8 & Under Boys Division with 19 points
* Bennett Leslie in the 6 & Under Boys Division with only 5 points
congratulations to all the Tigersharks for a great job this year in the water
the Southern Illinois All Star Swim Meet will be this Saturday in Millstadt

(NEWTON)  at the 13U Babe Ruth Ohio Valley Region Tournament in Munster, Indiana
the Jasper County All Stars came away with two wins and two losses last week
in the Pool Play competition, two Jasper County players were recognized for their efforts
* Ross Farley was named the Most Valuable Player in the first two games of Pool Play last Thursday
* teammate Mason Schafer was named the Most Valuable Player in the third Pool Play game on Friday
then the Jasper County team was eliminated in the first game of the final round tournament
* Ben Meinhart was named the MVP in Jasper County’s final game on Saturday
here’s the rest of the Jasper Country players that made up the 13U Babe Ruth team
* Lane Bradley, Griffith Smith, Marc Jansen, Owen Mahaffey
* also Aaron Einhorn, Weston Tharp, Mason Mulvey, and Zak Pitcher

 (OLNEY)  the 12 Year Old State Tournament ended last night in Olney’s Musgrove Park
the championship game wrapped up the double elimination event
* it was Hinsdale claiming the championship with a 4-0 victory over Beardstown
congratulations to the Olney Little League and the City of Olney for hosting the successful tournament

(OLNEY)  the Olney FFA Alumni 16th Annual Golf Outing & Raffle is this coming Friday, August 4th, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – it’s lunch at 12 noon and a shotgun start at 1:00 – $50 per person or $200 for a team of four with all proceeds to help sponsor FFA activities and scholarships – team prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places are four Cardinal tickets per team  :  also raffle tickets are still on sale with the drawing to be this Friday – the grand prize is the choice of $5,000 cash or $5,000 towards the purchase of a 4-wheeler at Travco Motorsports or a purchase at an Alliance Tractor dealer, plus $250 to 2nd place and $100 to 3rd place – the $10 tickets are available from any FFA or FFA Alumni member – must be 16 years old to win, but need not be present to win – for tickets or more details, call Jamie at  618-843-5488

 

(NEWTON)  here’s a note to all parents of athletes at the Jasper County Junior High School in Newton  :
* the parent’s meeting for all JCJH fall sports is this evening, August 1st, at 6:00, in the NCHS Auditorium – parents of junior high students who want to participate in baseball, cross country, or softball should attend tonight’s meeting – they’ll fill out necessary forms, get schedules, & pay the $25 per player participation fee

 

(OLNEY)  Richland County High School will host an athletic meeting for parents, coaches and student athletes who plan to participate in high school athletics during the 2017-2018 school year – it’s coming up this evening at 6:00 in the RCHS Sliva Auditorium – the Fall Sports coaches will also conduct their individual team meetings for their respective sports – all students who plan to participate in athletics during the upcoming school year should attend the meeting tonight at Richland County High School in Olney

 

(NEWTON)  call the Newton Community High School office to purchase reserved seats for Newton Eagle football this fall – the general public can purchase seats at NCHS from 8:00 to 12:00 noon this morning
