(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball last night – the Cardinals won big at home
* the Redbirds beat up on the visiting Cincinnati Reds, 13-4
here’s how the other Midwestern teams did last night
* those that won were the Cubs, Brewers, Royals, Indians, Twins, Astros, and Braves
* those that lost were the Pirates, White Sox, Tigers, and Rangers
the Cardinals are back in action tonight with game two of three against the Reds in St. Louis

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Cross Country yesterday – Olney hosted a three team meet at OCC
Lawrenceville won the triangular by beating 2nd place Olney, 23 to 35 – Mt. Carmel finished 3rd
here’s the top Lady Tiger runners
* Tristen Payne finished in 2nd place while teammate Danni Murphy was in 4th place
* the 2.96 mile race winner was Lawrenceville’s Katie Moore – Mt. Carmel’s Jada Smith was 3rd
* Olney’s Gracie Julian, Abby Rauch, and Hallie Troester finished 11th, 12th, and 13th respectively
the Lady Tigers are back in action this Saturday when they host the Olney Invitational at OCC

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Cross Country yesterday – Olney hosted a three team meet at OCC
Lawrenceville won the event by beating out 2nd place Olney, 23 to 33 – Mt. Carmel was 3rd at 83
here’s the top Olney Tiger runners
* Caleb Thomas finished in 3rd place while teammate Owen Powell was in 6th place
* Lawrenceville’s Jack Holden won the 2.96 mile race followed by teammate Max Smigiel in 2nd place
* Olney’s Braden Nicholson, Tyler Hughes, Jordan Belcher, & Colin Gilreath finished 7th thru 10th
the Tigers now prepare to host the popular Olney Invitational Meet this Saturday at Olney Central College

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Volleyball last night – Newton won two matches and split the other at home
the Lady Eagles won the varsity match over Charleston in two sets, 25-8, 25-20
* Newton was led by Kelsi Geltz, Abby Frohning, Maddi Hemrich, and Mariah Earnest
Newton won the junior varsity match in three sets and split the freshman match with one set apiece
the Lady Eagles are back in LIC volleyball action tomorrow night at Casey-Westfield High School

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Volleyball last night – Olney dropped three, three-set, matches on the road
the Lady Tigers lost the varsity match at Salem in three sets, 15-25, 28-26, 21-25
* Olney was led by Faith Stallard, Raegen Hires, Emi Rose, Colleen Inyart, and Addie Hemrich
Salem also won both the junior varsity and freshman matches in three sets each
the Lady Tigers are back in LIC action tomorrow night as they travel to Bridgeport to play Red Hill

 

(OLNEY)  in Girls High School Golf yesterday – Oblong hosted three teams at Oak Glen Golf Course
with the team scores consisting of three players – Oblong beat Olney and Vandalia, 133 to 165 to 179
* the Match Medalist was Oblong’s Katelyn Leggitt with a low round three over par 39
* Olney’s Madeline McKinney shot a 52
* Olney’s Kourtney Burgener shot a 56 and Agibail Nealis shot a 57
the Lady Tigers are back on the links tomorrow at Casey against Casey-Westfield and Robinson

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Tennis yesterday – Newton won on the road before the rains came
the Lady Eagles defeated Casey-Westfield, 8-0
Newton won all six of the singles matches and took the two doubles matches before it started raining
the Lady Eagles are back on the courts Saturday at the Casey-Westfield Doubles Tournament

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Soccer yesterday – Olney lost a tough match on the road south
in the battle of the Tigers, Olney fell to Herrin, 3-1
* Olney’s only goal was scored by Kye Stallard
the Soccer Tigers are back on Ed Webber Field at OCC tomorrow when they host Effingham St. Anthony

* Dieterich beat St. Elmo / Brownstown in three sets
Baseball  :
* South Central beat Windsor / Stewardson-Strasburg, 6-4
* Dieterich beat Cowden-Herrick / Beecher City, 12-0
Girls Tennis  :
* Effingham St. Anthony beat Paris, 9-0
* Flora at Mattoon was rained out

Class 1A  :  Neoga beat Altamont, 10-2  :  Effingham St. Anthony beat Martinsville, 12-2
Class 1A  :  Findlay Okaw Valley beat Effingham Sacred Heart, 10-0

Class 2A  :  Toledo Cumberland beat Bridgeport Red Hill, 7-5
Class 2A  :  Beecher City beat Sullivan, 5-3  :  Shelbyville Moulton beat Brownstown, 10-4

                                  LOCAL AND AREA SPORTS REMINDERS

 

(NEWTON)  the Lincoln Trail College Statesmen baseball team is returning to Busch Stadium this fall for an exhibition game – the Statesmen will play Lewis & Clark Community College from Godfrey on Sunday, October 1st – this will be the third consecutive year the two teams will match up against each other after a Cardinals game at Busch Stadium – tickets are now on sale which includes a ticket to the Cardinals’ final regular season game against the Brewers, plus the Cardinals will give out free ticket vouchers for a 2018 game next year, and then the Statesmen and Trailblazers game to follow as well – tickets for the LTC fundraiser are now on sale – call Coach Kevin Bowers at  618-546-2269  or by email at  This email address is being protected from spambots. (OLNEY)  the Richland County F.O.P. (Fraternal Order of Police) will have a fundraising Golf Outing on Sunday afternoon, September 24th, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – there’s still room for teams of four players to sign up at a cost of $200 per team – it begins with a pulled pork lunch at 11:30 and a shotgun start at 1:00 – if any questions or to sign up, call Kevin at  618-839-5922  or the Country Club in Olney

 

(OLNEY)  the annual Richland Memorial Hospital Foundation Charity  Classic is set for Friday, September 22nd, at the Richland Country Club in Olney – it begins with registration and lunch at 11:00 and a shotgun start at 1:00, followed by the catered dinner served at 5:00 – there will be various prizes and more – the cost is $350 for a team of four, which includes lunch, dinner, golf carts, and golfing – plus there are $20 tickets for dinner only on sale as well – space is limited to the first 36 teams – all proceeds will benefit the Medical School Fund – for details or to sign up, call the Foundation Office at  618-395-6088
