(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball last night – the Cardinals lost their final west coast game
* the Redbirds were shutout by San Diego, 3-0 although they took three out of four from the Padres
here’s how the other Midwestern teams did with a limited schedule Thursday
* those that won were the Cubs, Indians, Twins, and Braves
* those that lost were the Pirates, Reds, White Sox, and Royals
the Cardinals return home to start a six game home stand with the first of three tonight against the Pirates

 

(OLNEY)  in High School Volleyball last night – Olney swept two matches at home in Ron Herrin Gym
the Lady Tigers won the varsity match over Lawrenceville in two sets, 25-11, 25-16
* Olney’s top players were Faith Stallard, Addie Hemrich, Taylor Ferguson, and Raegan Hires
Olney also won the junior varsity match in two sets
the Lady Tigers varsity is back in action next Tuesday as they travel to Salem
the Olney fresh/soph squad is scheduled to play tomorrow at the Flora Tournament

 

(NEWTON)  in High School Volleyball last night – Newton dropped two of three matches at home
the Lady Eagles lost their varsity match to visiting Edwards County in three sets, 25-20, 19-25, 9-25
* Newton’s top players were Abby Frohning, Kelsi Geltz, Maddi Hemrich, and Josie Meinhart
Edwards County also won the junior varsity match in three sets – Newton won the freshman match
the Lady Eagles are back in action next Tuesday when they’ll host Charleston in the NCHS Gym

 

(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Soccer yesterday – Olney lost a tough match at home
the Tigers fell to Murphysboro, 2-1
* Olney’s lone goal was scored by Matteo Garzia, assisted by Kye Stallard
* Olney also had some good overall play by Josiah Burckhartt
the Soccer Tigers are back in action Monday when they’ll host South Knox, Indiana at OCC

 

(NEWTON)  in Boys High School Soccer yesterday – Newton won at home
the Eagles beat Arthur-Lovington / Atwood-Hammond, 7-0
* Newton was led by 2 goals each by Nacho Moragues and Ben Carr
* plus single goals scored by Jack Chapman, Cole Farley, and Ross Farley
* assists from Ben Carr (2), Sean Brody (1), Giuseppe Cucinella (1), Ross Farley (1), Nacho Moragues (1)
the 6-0-2 Soccer Eagles are back in action next Monday at Altamont

 

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Tennis yesterday – Newton won at home over Casey-Westfield, 8-1
the Lady Eagles won all six of the singles matches – the Newton winners included
* Jacelyn Street, Sydney Zumbahlen, Lesley Woods, Allison Harris, Keri Zumbahlen, Madelynne Boldery
Newton won two of the three doubles matches – the winning pairs were
* Jacelyn Street and Allison Harris / Keri Zumbahlen and Chelsea Black
the Lady Eagles are back in action next Monday at Effingham

(NEWTON)  in Girls High School Cross Country yesterday – Newton hosted a four team meet
Cowden-Herrick / Beecher City won the event by beating 2nd place Dieterich, 21 to 49
* Newton finished 3rd with 57 points followed by Casey-Westfield
here’s the individual results
* Newton’s Abby Stone won the race
* Newton’s Sydney Rudolphi was 15th, Jacqie Barthelme was 18th, and Mya Kuhn was 19th
* Dieterich’s top runner was Gracie Britton in 8th place while Kaitlyn Bloemer was 10th
the Lady Eagles are back in action next Thursday at Dieterich

 

(NEWTON)  in Boys High School Cross Country yesterday – Newton hosted a five team meet
Cowden-Herrick / Beecher City won a very close meet over 2nd place Casey-Westfield, 45 to 46
* Dieterich finished in 3rd place with 62 points followed  by Newton at 95 and North Clay at 112
Here’s the top individual results
* Casey-Westfield’s Cort Ross won the race
* Newton’s Tucker Rieman finished 5th while Bob Rauch was 16th
* Dieterich’s top runner was Ryan Radloff in 7th place while Seth Bohnhoff was 9th
the Eagles are back in action next Thursday at Dieterich

the 14-2 Jasper County boys are back in action today when they’ll host St. Anthony in Newton

                                  LOCAL AND AREA SPORTS REMINDERS

 

(OLNEY)  the Girl’s Junior League Basketball Program for Richland County girls in 4th and 5th grades will get started next week with the first workouts scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, September 12th and 14th, each evening from 5:00 to 6:00, at the Richland County Elementary School – the program’s team draft will be held the following Tuesday, September 19th – but time’s running out for girls to sign up as all registration forms must be filled out and returned to the RCES Secretaries by today, this September 8th – the fee is $40 per player, which helps cover the cost of jerseys, insurance, and equipment – the registration forms are available at RCES or call Coach Mark Anselment at RCHS,  618-393-2191

 

(OLNEY)  the 2017 Olney Bicycle Classic is tomorrow in downtown Olney – it starts with the Richland County Challenge Ride at 8:00 in the morning, with registration required by 7:45 – then the free TrustBank Family Ride begins at 9:30 with registration by 9:15 – the Kids Races for those ages 2 to 14 will start at 11:00 with registration required for all events by 10:45 – and the Pacific Cycle Stunt Show will finish things up at 12:15, plus Pacific Cycle employees will be on hand to do basic bike safety checks – concessions provided by the OCC Student Senate – for registration forms or more, logon at  www.olneychamber.com
