(OLNEY)  in Major League Baseball over the weekend – the Cardinals split two in San Francisco
* the Redbirds lost to the Giants Saturday, 2-1 in ten innings, but won yesterday, 7-3
here’s how the other Midwestern teams did on Saturday and Sunday
* those that won both games were the Pirates, White Sox, and Indians, plus the Astros won three games
* those that split their games were the Cubs, Royals, Twins, Rangers, and Braves
* those that dropped both games were the Reds and Tigers
the Cardinals are still on the west coast for their first of three in San Diego against the Padres today


(OLNEY)  in College Football action from Saturday – here’s the only downstate Illinois result
* the Fighting Illini beat Ball State, 24-21 – Illinois will host Western Kentucky Saturday night
* the SIU Salukis will open their season this Saturday night at home against Mississippi Valley State
* the 1-0 EIU Panthers are on the road Saturday afternoon up to DeKalb to play Northern Illinois


(OLNEY)  in Boys High School Soccer Saturday – Olney won on the road
the Tigers won their varsity match over Altamont, 3-1
* the Olney goals were scored by Jacob McVicker, Josiah Burchhartt, and Seth Kocher
* the Tiger assists included two by Kye Stallard and the other by Trey Nosek
* Olney also had some great defense from Seth Ingram
Olney also won the junior varsity match over Altamont, 2-1
* Olney’s jv goals were scored by Harrison Hahn and Keen Simpson
the Soccer Tigers are back in action tomorrow when they’ll host Newton at OCC’s Ed Webber Field

the Eagles won the varsity match by beating Charleston, 1-0
* Newton’s lone goal was scored by Jack Chapman
the 5-0-1 Eagles are back in action tomorrow at Olney


(OLNEY)  in High School Volleyball at Saturday’s Casey-Westfield Classic Tournament
Olney finished the day with two out of five match wins, ending up in 6th place among the twelve teams
* the Lady Tigers had wins over Monticello and Fairfield
* Olney, however lost to Tolono Unity, Mt. Zion, and Newton
* Olney’s top players on the day were Faith Stallard, Addie Hemrich, Colleen Inyart, and Brittany Black
by the way, Mt. Zion won the Tournament while Edwards County finished in 2nd place
* Edwards County beat Monticello, Teutopolis, Newton, and Hartsburg-Emden before losing to Mt. Zion
the 4-3 Lady Tigers are back in action Thursday at home in Ron Herrin Gym against Lawrenceville


(NEWTON)  in High School Volleyball at Saturday’s Casey-Westfield Classic Tournament
Newton won its final two matches, after dropping two of three in pool play, to finish in 5th place
* the Lady Eagles lost to Teutopolis in three sets, 25-15, 23-25, 10-15
* Newton then lost to Edwards County in two sets, 17-25, 23-25
* the Lady Eagles beat Monticello in two sets, 25-19, 25-12
then Newton played two matches in the Silver Division
* the Lady Eagles beat Teutopolis in two sets, 25-15, 25-23
* Newton won the Silver Division by beating Olney in two sets, 25-21, 25-22

the Newton Lady Eagles won the five team event by beating 2nd place Robinson, 124 to 100
* Centralia finished 3rd with 91 points, followed by Fairfield at 46 and Salem at 40
Newton had four flight winners
* Jacelyn Street in #1 singles
* Allison Harris in #2 singles
* Sydney Zumbahlen and Lesley Woods in #1 doubles
the Lady Eagles are back on the courts tomorrow at Flora, traveling down to Frog Island

* also in Decatur – Teutopolis beat Putnam County, 15-1 in six innings

* the Olney 7th & 8th grade team beat Red Hill, 30-20
* the Olney 5th & 6th grade team lost to Red Hill, 42-6
* the Olney 3rd & 4th grade team beat Red Hill, 40-6
the Olney teams are back in action this coming Saturday with three games on the road at Flora

(OLNEY)  the 2017 Olney Bicycle Classic is this coming Saturday in downtown Olney – it starts with the Richland County Challenge Ride at 8:00 that morning, with registration required by 7:45 – then the free TrustBank Family Ride begins at 9:30 with registration by 9:15 – the Kids Races for those ages 2 to 14 will start at 11:00 with registration required for all events by 10:45 – and the Pacific Cycle Stunt Show will finish things up at 12:15, plus Pacific Cycle employees will be on hand to do basic bike safety checks – concessions provided by the OCC Student Senate, plus free event t-shirts available for all participants – for details or for registration forms, logon at  www.olneychamber.com  or call the Chamber office at  392-2241
