(OLNEY)  An approaching cold front will move thru Illinois by tonight, giving us rain chances later on today thru tonight – while most of Sunday will be dry, the remnants of Hurricane Nate could bring some rain to the southeast section of Illinois tomorrow evening – then after a dry Monday, maybe more rain chances for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week – stay tuned for continued weather updates & details.

 

(OLNEY)  In state news – Governor Bruce Rauner’s replacing his Chief of Staff after just 13 weeks – Kristina Rasmussen resigned yesterday and it will be the state’s Public Safety Director, Rodger Heaton, replacing her – Rasmussen is leaving to “pursue other interests” – Heaton has been PS Director since the first of 2015 – Heaton served as a U.S. Attorney for the Central District of Illinois from 2006 to 2009.

 

(OLNEY)  Downstate residents are urged to take part in this year’s Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill, set for Thursday, October 19th – schools, businesses, families, & others can sign up for the drill online, at  www.shakeout.org/centralus  – for earthquake preparedness tips, go online at  www.Ready.Illinois.gov.

 

(OLNEY/NEWTON)  All area blood donors are encouraged to get out and give blood at their next chance – here’s the list of all upcoming regional blood drives  :  today at the Blood Donation Center in Effingham from 7:45 to 2:15  :  tomorrow morning at the Holy Cross Parish Center in Wendelin from 8:00 to 12:00  :  all blood types and platelets are very much needed to help replenish low regional and area blood supplies.

 

REMINDERS :  
    The Olney VFW Auxiliary has it’s Family Freedom Festival tomorrow afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00 in the parking lot just north of the Courthouse in Olney – includes carnival games, music, a cake walk, bingo, and a light supper – visitors are urged to bring their lawn chairs and all ages are welcome to attend


    The St. Paul Lutheran Church, 3 miles north of Dieterich, will host its Corn Maze this weekend – from 3:00 to 10:00 today thru tonight, including a bonfire & the Amazing Flashlight Corn Maze – then tomorrow from 3:00 to 6:00 – includes train rides, games, concessions, & a straw maze for tots – all are invited


    The Olney Public Library is hosting a free 9/11 Craft and Games event this afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 – all ages are invited to come share memories, play games, & make crafts to decorate the Library”s Never Forget 9-11 Tree – the 9-11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit is coming to Olney late next week


    The Richland County Republican Central Committee has its Annual Fall Event today in the Olney City Park Community Building from 12 noon to 1:30 – there will be chowder, barbeque, desserts, & more, with tickets at only $5 each, available from Republican Precinct Committeemen or at the door this afternoon – stop by and have lunch, plus meet local and state officeholders and candidates – all are invited to attend


    The Flora American Legion Post 14 will host a Hutsonville Homeless Veterans Benefit Ride today and all vehicles are welcome – with registration at 9:30 this morning, the event leaves Flora at 11:00 – then it’s back to Flora for a live auction and entertainment this evening – all donations appreciated


    The Sailor Springs Chowder is today with serving from 11:00 to 2:00 – along with chowder, there’ll also be barbeque, brats, pie, and cake – either dine-in or carry-out – bring your own containers, but no glass – bring your lawn chairs – also inflatables & live music from the group Liberty Road – all invited


    The Walmart DC 6059’s fundraising motorcycle ride to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network is today – it will leave Travco Motorsports at 10:00 this morning and head over to Martins State Forest Park in Indiana – the $20 per rider or $35 per rider with passenger fees include a t-shirt & lunch


    The 27th Annual Marching Eagles Band Classic is today at Newton Community High School with a total of 15 bands, including the Marching Tigers from Olney, competing in four separate classes – the first band starts at 9:45 this morning – then the Marching Eagles have an exhibition performance at 2:30 with awards presented at 2:50 – concessions available with proceeds to the Band Boosters – all spectators invited


    The Yale Village-wide Garage Sale is today with all visitors welcome – with most of the garage sales planned for the morning hours, a few will continue into early afternoon – all today on this Saturday in Yale


    HealthFest 2017 is this morning from 7:30 to 11:00 in the OCC Gymnasium, sponsored by Olney Central College & Carle Richland Memorial Hospital – exhibitors from community health & wellness organizations will answer questions & to pass out informative literature, plus various health screenings and much more


    The Olney Quilt Guild has its White Squirrel Quilt Show continues today at the Olney Church of the Nazarene on North Walnut Street – that’s today from 10:00 to 4:00 – admission is $5 per person
